Finally, i got my first ever V8 !
Discussion
A 2006 Jaguar S-type R, with the 4.2 supercharged V8
Current fleet is (was) a 3000GT (which is still/again of the road with issue's) and a Renault-sport Clio 182 as a run around.
And the plan was to sell the 3000GT and buy a TVR Chimaera. I always wanted a V8 and the TVR seemed the perfect car as a weekend/fun car that would fit in our single garage whilst using the 182 as a daily.
But as we also want to take it to Holland a few times a year i was getting worried about the reliability issue's, despite knowing a few people that have none with their TVR's.
But then last week whilst waiting at the light on a roundabout some big 4x4 vauxhall number (Antara?) drove into the side of me in the 182 causing quiet a bit of damage, which will likely write the car off
My initial thought was to get another 182, as i must admit i do really like them, 900 kg and 182 bhp is a good combination and i loved taking it for a blast round the little countrylanes here.
But my wife wasn't a fan of it (probably partly because of the way i drove it ) and i must admit it had a few points that i didn't like. We struggled getting people in the back due to the recaro racing seats in the front, i didn't really like the boyracer image they have (i'm not 19 anymore...) and we took it to Holland and France last summer and they're not great motorway journey cars.
My wife suggested maybe getting a "sensible, 4 door car" as a daily, and i can have something fun that fits in the garage as a weekend toy. And after she pointing at a Jaguar S-type that drove past saying she liked it a little lightbulb (in the shape of an 'R') lit up in my head....
I showed her some pictures of an S Type R online and explained it'll have the 4 doors you want, and the engine i want, and i sat out for looking one.
Yesterday someone not far from here came round with one and i spend the whole morning going over it, and made an extensive testdrive.
A deposit was paid, and tomorrow morning i will be picking it up
It's a 2006 Jaguar S-Type R, with the 4.2 supercharged V8 and a lot of goodies and upgrades (audio, voice activated everything), full Jaguar specialst service hx, everything maintained/services at the correct milage, and the owner has a on this jaguar forum for 5 years and i've been through all his posts/comments/questions which showed how well looked after this car was.
I absolutely love it, it's like driving a luxery sofa on steroids
Only plans so far are getting a nice exhaust upgrade for it so it sounds a bit better (bit quiet now) and replacing those orange indicators with clear ones.
I'm not really concerned about the MPG as i've got an 8 minute walk to work and my wife takes the train to London.
So i've now got my V8, which will be lovely and comfy on motorway journeys to Holland and i can look at something else for a weekend car now.
My initial thoughts were maybe a Caterham or Westfield, but the wife didn't seem impressed with something "with no doors or roof or anything" but she did like the look of the Vauxhall VX220 i showed her, so i think over the summer i might start looking at one of those.
I just need to get through a week of "Do you have a flat cap and tweed jacket" comments of mates now

Glad to hear others do this! I showed my wife a pic of a S5 and she really liked the look of it ... I forgot to mention the V8 though

Well done - a well looked after Type R is a definitely a bargain for it's refinement and performance I'm really tempted to get one of this or a Volvo S60R.

It's all about compromising isn't it, but in our adventage They want 4 doors, we show them 4 doors, and just tell them how good/nice the car is, and they'll agree Glad to hear others do this! I showed my wife a pic of a S5 and she really liked the look of it ... I forgot to mention the V8 though

I'd done the same when we bought the 182. With my GT off the road i had to use her 1.0 shopping trolley (old style corsa) which was boring me to death, so i said i have to replace it with something a bit more fun to drive, which was ok as long as it was a similar size small car.
Showed her the 182 at a local dealer, "ah yea, that's the same size as my Corsa, and the dashboard even looks a bit similar, ok that's fine, you can buy it".
I didn't mention that the 2.0 182 was a slightly different car to the 1.0 corsa, and drove it very sensible for a couple of days, untill we came across some country lanes and i told her "this is why i bought this car" and floored it. I think her words were "Bloody hell!"

Years ago when i bought my first GTO it was advertised locally and i contacted the guy about it, who said it was a great car, never had any problems with it, never damaged bla bla bla. But not long previous i'd joined the GTO owners club forum to ask about these cars, and somebody pointed out that the car i was about to buy was owned by someone on there, and advised me to read up about it.There were loads of topics about problems he had, still ongoing problems, a cheap replacement engine, and the worst was it was badly damaged in a crash and then repaired, which he never mentioned when i asked about it.
So from then one i always try and find as much info on a car i'm buying as i can. I was very lucky with the 182, as that was owned by an enthousiast as well, and when joining their club forum i actually found his first posts somewhere in 2006 where he had the car delivered brand new. Gone through his posts on the forum to see if he had any problems/accidents with the car which he didn't, and whilst reading about that car, like with this Jag, it showed how well it was looked after, which is always a bonus.

Vauxhall VX?!... I'll take you out in the S2000 next time bud, get you off of that filly idea
I must admit they did brielfy cross my mind. The GT and the Jag are both fast, but also big heavy cars, i want something light and nible, with the same fun factor as the 182. But ideally with a roof that i can drop.
I've never been in a S2000 but do like it's looks, though what i've heard is that their fast "once you're going", at higher revs, but not so fast of the line, but feel free to correct me.
When i get to buying i guess i'll just have to drop both the S2000 and VX220.
