A bit of a departure from the usual something for under 10k for weekend fun.

I'm in my late 20's, no kids, in the middle east so cheap petrol and car will used occasionally. This will be my first very fast car, the dream is a DBS to live out my Bond fantasys and hopefully keep into old age but in the interim with a slightly reduced budget I'm considering the following:

2008 Maserati Granturismo
Stunning looks, friends can come to, relatively modern, Italian soundtrack, Italian running costs particularly at this age.

2010 Maserati Quattroporte GTS
As above but friends have commented that it will look as though I've borrowed my Dad's car. I get this already with my Merc

2008 Porsche 911 Turbo
Default choice, reliable in the long term, very quick, lacks a little emotion

2007 Aston Martin DB9
Has that badge, amazing looks, V12 running costs, ICE is outdated and some dubious interior colours on the market

2007 Audi R8
Only car in my budget that is still current looking, great looks, V8 soundtrack, no backseats

2009 Mercedes CL63 AMG
Engine blows you away, great toys, very practical, low running costs in this group, subjective looks

2011 Audi RS5 / 2011 BMW M3
Grouped them together both great capable cars but maybe a bit too ordinary for a "supercar/ dream car"

Unfortunately in the local market F430, Gallardo and V8 Vantage are just over what I'm willing to spend.
So over to you Pistonheads do I buy the Porsche? Grateful to hear from anyone who has any experience of these.

None of the above are Supercars.

But - I'd take the Aston - purely for the sense of occasion.

The term 'supercar' is subjective though...

I'd say the GranTurismo, 911 Turbo, Audi R8 and DB9 all qualify as supercars...

Of that list, I'd say the 911 Turbo is your best bet, its a near-perfect car.

The GranTurismo looks and sounds glorious though...

Out of those, either the Turbo or DB9.
911 for the performance bang-for-your-buck and the DB9 as an alternative to the DBS of your dreams.

Considered a Gallardo? Are they in budget?

Couple of others:

R8 V8
XKR

If it were my money, however, I'd be off down to my local Lotus dealer to collect an Evora S.

Out of those, I'd probably go for the Audi. Mostly because it's the only one that's mid-engined and I've always preferred the balance and general feel of mid-engined cars.

Sorry about that, to my mind they're supercars rather than hypercars but maybe a should have titled it what fast special occasion cars. I'd have to agree with you though the Aston pulls on my heart strings but there seems to be so many drawbacks to owning one.

The Porsche is the easiest one to justify as it ticks every box. The Maserati in second place with some concerns about it being too relaxed to be exciting.
The DB9 is very hard to come by a good one in my budget with some compromise.
Even very earlier Gallardos with garish colours are out of my budget.
The R8 is in budget and of all the above I haven't driving one yet, only sat in it in the showroom and starting picking out switchgear from a B7 A4 so maybe a test drive is in order.
Unfortunately the Jaguar and Lotus are sold in very small numbers over here so resale and finding a good one would be too challenging

Slightly depressing that you don't even have handling (or any element of it) in the list of things he might prioritise. hehe

He might be slightly interested in Air Con. wink Also, I didn't know any of the above cars come without it?

Or the OP could lose to stand a few pounds - in which case - if no aircon - be sure to get the wipe clean leather seats.

To be fair, given that it's to be a special occasion car brand is probably high on the list otherwise I'd buy a hot hatch. Followed by acceleration and some degree of practicality as it will be my only car so it will used for rugby training or date at a nice restaurant. It's close to 50c here in the summer so hard top and air con are needed. It also won't be a track car and the roads are ruler straight here so Lotus Elise levels of handling aren't necessary.

As a last minute addition to my list and one that won't please those who are still having a go at the thread title is the Panamera. I don't like the looks especially compared with the Maseratis but as a package or from value perspective a 2010 Panamera 4S in a dark colour does look promising.

I went out yesterday to buy a 911S PDK, ended up nearly buying a Range Rover Supercharged, got distracted by an Aston Martin V12 Vantage which seems to good to be true and in the end bought an Audi R8 V8 R-Tronic without knowing anything about it.

A good day all in all
