Tax free date change 2015 ?
Discussion
Last year, in the Spring budget, the tax free date moved to the end of '73. 6 weeks from the build date of my pickup.
There was speculation at the time that the date might move forward again this year.
Any one any more news about this yet ?
Also, there was talk of being able to tax a month at a time.

2013 budget moved it from 1/1/73 to 1/1/74.2014 budget moved it to rolling 40.
So, yes, it'll be 1/1/75 from this April, 1/1/76 from next April (assuming it doesn't get chopped back after the election)

Annoyingly, one of mine was registered in May '75, I got my hopes up for a moment, but will have to hang on for another year.
Might be worth doing some digging, because this is one of the few times that it's build date not first-reg date that actually matters. What is it?there used to be also a 7 day discretion, I know this because I had a car built on 8th of Jan 1973 so it just missed out by one day and my present Midget was registered in April '73 but was actually built on the 11th of Jan '73 so that just missed out until last year
so it's well worth checking your build date
especially for bigger engined cars as the petrol crisis was in 1974 so cars could have sat around for quite a while registered or not as the bigger drinking cars became less popular to buy at that time
and worth checking if the 7 days discretion still applies/is reapplied if yours was built before 8th Jan

My series Land Rover was first registered on 15-1-75, a quick check with the heritage centre showed it as built nov 74, I then
Had to pay £45 for a heritage certificate that the DVLA will except as proof of build date. I'm now about to post it all off to be tax free from April. (and hopefully LEZ compliant)

Did the same earlier today with my 74 TR6. Spent five times longer in the queue than it took to change the taxation class and tax the car! It really is simple now all cars are on the DVLA database with their MOT and insurance status. However, the process works on registration date, so if you have a car that was built before 1st Jan 1975, but was registered after that date you will have to prove the build date. In these instances the computer does not immediately say 'yes'!!

If it's a recent-ish import, then there'll probably be the original "home" first reg date on there, too, and that'll be enough.Once we get past the next year or so, any odd wrinkles from stuff around the move to DVLA will disappear, too.
Which'll just leave ex-military or stuff that was built before and registered after a year-change. You can get "year of manufacture" added to the DVLA record any time, and once it's on there, that'll then smooth the move to free tax. You'll need age proof from the manufacturer or a V765-list club.
