Great colour - what's with the towbar? I thought they weren't rated to tow anything!

Might be able to a tow a wheelie bin maybe. Not much else.

I've managed to lose the one and only key for the damn thing already and it's sat 70 miles away!

Ouch! frown Good luck finding it / getting it sorted

(I think even a wheelie bin might have too much nose weight though!)* wink

  • DISCLAIMER I'm a massive MX5 fan having had 2 MK1's myself, so i'm only messing smile

Being gutless is part of the charm!

I've missed the feeling of being able to rag a car without doing ridiculous speeds hehe

As for the key, I'm just hoping a locksmith will be able cut a new set for it. The one I had is probably on the floor in a service station car park. Bloody irritating thing to happen!

Finally rescued it!

Had a great blast in it the other night, brought it all back why I love these things so much. The 1.6 lump does seem to rev more nicely than the 1.8 I had before.
Picking up the lightweight Enkei alloys for it later in the week, removing the front fogs in the grill, plus going to remove the front numberplate and get a square offset one.

When the weather picks up I will be fitting my Tein springs which should give it a 40mm drop.

Locksmith had to cut one! Took him 3 hours because the boot lock which he took apart to get the shape was basically fked, he ended up having to cut a key by hand in the end!

The seller was a student, halfway through all of this his parents showed up to take him back home. The dad comes out with "I've got a spare key for that at home!"

The seller had no idea it existed. fking hell. hehe

Good news! Let's hope it's plain sailing from here on in - it's nearly convertible weather!

Was running smooth for a few days, then it overheated on Wednesday 30 miles from home hehe

The coolant overflowed out the expansion tank. Topped it up with some tap water, stuck the heaters on full and managed to get all the way home.

Hasn't been serviced in a while, hopefully a total flush and coolant replacement will sort it. God knows what the gunk in there now is laugh Going to be annoyed if I have to fit a new rad.

The fun continues!

Go for it, they arent hard to do, just time consuming.

Would be a real shame to scrap it, they are getting more scarce by the day, the time when we bin them for a HG has passed !

S/H engine might be the easiest way.

The timing looks like the hardest bit, luckily quite a lot of info online. A pair of workshop manuals and a couple of pizzas should be enough to guide me through it!

I agree about mk1s vanishing, whilst this car is certainly a project, I plan for it to be a keeper.

A second hand engine is certainly an option, £200-250 would get me one. But it's about time I learned how to sort out a HG. Lemonade from lemons, and all that.

I'm lucky the coolant hasn't flooded the oil, nothing worse than finding out your engine has been lubricated with mayo-slosh!

Piece if piss to do.

Highly, highly revetment you buy the 'rod grainger' manual on Amazon or eBay, then as long as you can read, you can fix anything. Miles better than a Haynes type.

The very manual I ordered last night! Read nothing but good things about it. Bought the Haynes the other day, looks ok but a bit vague in places.

hehe

Progress has been slow, and the car is looking pretty sorry for itself.
Cam sensor, coil pack, AFM & airbox, breather pipes, power steering belt, fans & radiator are all off so far.

Check out the inside of the thermostat. Delicious.

I've been trying to budge the alternator most of the evening. Even though the belt tensioner is removed and the long bolt is slackened. wobble
