Hi guys, just wondered if any fellow Pistonheaders were running the new Maserati Ghibli ?

I am debating buying one for a daily hack and wondered if anyone had put any decent miles on it and how they were getting on with it.

My choices are between a Panamera and Ghibli, but have read on the Ghibli forum a guy over there has had new brake discs and pads all round in only 14k miles and a cost of 4k !

Just concerned the build quality and consumable costs maybe a bit much for a daily hack.

Any info would be great from owners or those in the 'know' smile

Get the Panamera then come pick me up for a spin mate!
Or just get a quattroporte! Those Ghilblis just aren't special enough!

I'd be curious to know how owners are getting on too. Reviews have been mixed to say the least but it's a desirable car and the Harry Metcalfe video on it showed it in a good light.

My boss has a white diesel and whilst it looks great it has been massively unreliable, most recently having a full electronic meltdown leaving him with unassisted brakes and steering in the outside of the motorway...

He swears he won't buy one again...

I've driven a few versions of the new Ghibli and Quattroporte and they are ok but the latter is too big IMHO.

The V6 S engine is sweet with a strong mid range and a bit of lag from starting off. The Ghibli needs skyhook adaptive damping (standard on the QP) much more than bling wheels but apart from that it it reasonably well specified. The diesel is disappointing and has one year service intervals whereas the petrols are two years, both 12,500 miles mind.

Coming from a GranTurismo 4.7, they are very different cars but they are fine for their price points. Trouble is the diesel competition is better and very few people buy large engined petrol saloons any more.

I had the new QP for a few days and was very impressed with the interior. The Ghibli just doesn't have the same feel of luxury in my opinion, although the QP is a bit too big as somebody has already mentioned (ended up taking 2 parking bays like a van would as it's just so damn long).

The new QP is huge. Makes a Merc S class look petite.

Indeed, the QP rear doors just look too big but then the Ghibli is a bit tight in the back especially for getting your feet in. Neither are perfect. To some extent they need a QP SWB or a Ghilbi LWB.

I've driven the diesel and the petrol turbo, I liked them very nice looking, rare and I felt they had a real presence on the road.

I wasn't keen on the gear selector, the notches are very close and I kep putting it into park, rather than reverse.

I was going to buy one, but drove out in a GT-S which is an absolute joy.

Test drive it, if you like it who cares what other people think

Interestingly I've just watched Harry's review (Harry's Garage on YouTube) and I completely disagree with his comment that the Ghibli's interior is better than the QP.

I felt the passenger side in particular of the Ghibli's interior looks very cheap, the QP is far more elegant. In addition I think the Ghibli's driving position is a touch too high, the seat in the QP seems to sink lower into the cabin.

Just goes to show, take journalist opinions with a pinch of salt as only you can judge whether a car is right for yourself.

I've been running a Ghibli D since October and it's a good ca.
Had a few silly problems like poor window switches but otherwise great.
Only bad thing (also good if in the mood) wants to spin wheels and go sideways very easy in anything other than perfectly dry!
I had a QP as replacement why the tried to sort window switch and loved the look but hated the drive, it was like driving an oil tanker!!

Ghibli is by far better looking than the Porsche and I was surprised it turns heads. Sounds great with the sport button pressed( a must) and company car tax is good!

Can't fault it really, but not what I'd tell the wife when I want an FF or California T!
wink

Try and get a long weekend demo and see how it fits?

Don't get a grantorismo as the brakes are utterly st! They are off a 1980s BMX, I have vans that have better brakes than the 14 plate grandcabrio I had!

Having test driven the Ghibli a couple of months ago I decided against it.

The Ghibli just didnt seem to have much grunt, certainly less that the BMW 40d, but the interior, comfort and handling were brilliant.

If they bring out a 400bhp Diesel i would look again.

Weird, the brakes on my 2012 GranTurismo S are very good, either the cabrio has a different set-up or they were goosed or possibly both.

I had a diesel as a loan car while my fF was in for service last week. It's perfectly nice, the Diesel engine contrary to most reports sounds like s diesel but it's sweet enough and pulls just fine.

Got the kids in the back For nursery run and the sat nav is very nice - way better than the FF!

Having sat in both Ghibli and qP I'm surprised at the words here - the interior fixtures like cubby holes say nav etc are all identical. Leather in qP is a grade up though.

I think the Ghibli is a decent car and deserves to do well. It's the car for someone who wants something different though in diesel form - vs a 5 series 3.0 D I woukd think it comes up short in terms of driving experience, but it's individual quiet and comfortable and everything works. Wasn't exciting enough though - I want a maserati to make my heart race. It is pretty though..

A decent petrol engine in it would probably transform the experience.

Was glad to get my FF back though!

I was given a 3.0 Petrol Ghibli for around 3 weeks as a courtesy car whilst my GTS was waiting for parts to arrive from Italy - It is simply appalling! Horrible ride quality, in sports mode the exhausts rattle like f u c k and seem they can't handle the noise crazy vibrations...there is always a horrible drone in the car when in sports mode - bad design. The info screen is like some after market Halfords Kit from China and very slow.

The interior materials feel cheap - plastic and not at all premium. The leather steering wheel in my C class felt much nicer to hold than this one.

I dropped the key on the floor by mistake and the buttons on the key came off and went all over the place! Took me 10 mins to find all the buttons and fix it all back together LOL! If you don't believe me drop your Ghibli key and watch it come to pieces - I was SHOCKED! They are just clicked on the key.

The car feels like it is a Vauxhall or Hyundai and not a Maserati...I really can't believe how they allowed this in to production!! It loses traction even in the dry - yes it is pretty powerful but as a great man once said - power is nothing without control!

I didn't feel comfortable driving it fast at all. This car was made to compete with the likes of BMW, Audi and Mercedes Benz but IMHO has no chance...no bloody way!

get a Panamera mate you will be way better off. If you really want a Maser it has to be a GTS !

A pal of mine in the trade was offered a 6 month old diesel Ghibli with only 1200 miles, it cost £67k new with options, needed a wheel refurb or 2 and only had one key, it was traded back to a Maserati dealer for £37k, he was getting bids as low as £35k from most places.
