Apologies if this is in the wrong area.

My 02 Bug STI has gone in for some TLC and MOT prep, as part of this inspection we've found that the front C Subframe has two whacking great holes of rot in it.

The obvious option being to track down a second hand one and replace, the other option a few people have suggested is to dispose of the C frame and replace it with an aftermarket brace. Couple of questions

- is this a bit of a cheap bodge, or a genuine fix?
- if it is a recommended fix then what wishbone brace do people recommend? Reluctant to purchase a generic eBay item.

not needed for MOT... just undo the 8 bolts and drop the thing off...
The U shaped frame is only there for the crash tests.. there are a few threads on scoobynet and NAISOC.. the consensus of opinion was it made the car from 4 to 5 star rating in the US.
The Type RA came without the U frame..
The only issue with removing it is that the plastic under tray wont have anywhere to fit onto.

On my old bug.. I found a replacement from a JDM which was in much better shape, so i could keep the undertray. I then treated the surface rust n covered it in Dinitrol.

I didnt fit a brace under the car.. but I think the common Trapezoid brace is designed to fit in addition to the U frame.
