I was at the gym today, sweating buckets on the elliptical cross trainer thingy when I realised that the guy on the machine next to me was rotating the steps backwards,he seemed very pleased with himself and continued for 20 minutes. Why would anyone do this?
It's quite a long time?Re the words question I remember reading a very interesting Bill Bryson book all about language. All English is one of the most descriptive languages I remember him saying we do notably lack some descriptive words. I'll try find what they were.
A phase I was told by some Spanish people that I liked meant "to show too much face" and was basically when somebody is trying to trick you and they come over too friendly and nice. Does anyone know the phrase in Spanish?
It perfectly describes people in some situations

Bacteria in the air.Is there a word in any language that describes what Gordon Gecko in Wall street referred to as
"What FOR WÀNT OF A BETTER WORD I shall call greed".
In other words expresses the perfectly legitimate desire to provide a comfortable life for yourself and your family and your M5 but without the connotations of trampling over others to achieve it.

Except that's not the definition of 'greed'."What FOR WÀNT OF A BETTER WORD I shall call greed".

Aspiration comes close but doesn't have the implication of drive, you can aspire to something without it being a major priority.

have 69p chromatic tuners on devices like mobile phones put piano tuners out of business? On a piano, a single string produces a single note, so it's not the same as other stringed instruments where you have the action, intonation, etc to consider.
Or is it?
I think piano tuners will continue to be in work for a while yet it isn't quite as simple as that.Or is it?

Ah, OK. So someone who earns just enough to get by in comfort with their family. Ambitious? Eager? Zealous? Unfortunately the concept changes somewhat when you mention an M5. Covetousness, cupidity, pride etc. Mainly because you're mixing two different constructs - The perceived subjective/objective goal of a comfortable family life seen as essential to self-fulfilment - an emotional and often spiritual craving - and the totally selfish goal of a flash material object largely regarded as being driven by a dick.
This is precisely the point. You fail to distinguish between wanting to afford an M5, and selfishly wanting to afford an M5. So you regard the word 'greed' as covering all cases. But for those of us who regard ownership of an M5, or a 911, or a yacht as perfectly legitimate goals in themselves we need to distinguish between pursuing them legitimately or selfishly.Dr Jekyll said:

You don't want an M5 then? It's always selfish to a degree isn't it?But ok, you want to talk degrees of greed. So somewhere on the greed continuum from entirely selfless (how on Earth can you say that when forking out for car for yourself?) to selfish and greedy...

They are perfectly legitimate goals in themselves. Why shouldn't they be? But greed as you want it defined is a personal construct. If you can easily afford an M5 then it's not greedy. If you have to mortgage your house to own three...Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
