Evening, Father-in-laws birthday in April, half the family live in Harlow ish area and the other half live Derbyshire.

So its been banded about that we find ideally a couple of log cabin type affairs for the weekend.

There will be from the south 4 adults (FIL/MIL/BIL/SIL) and 2 Nieces and 1 dog.

From Derbyshire Me and Mrs400, her son and her daughter and her partner and 1 dog.

Have any of the PH massive got a clue or an idea where we should start, not really fussed on areas as long as there is plenty to do.

I meet up with a group of school mates once a year and we stay here - http://www.barnsdalehotel.co.uk/rentals-c91.html - book one of the chalets which sleeps 6 I think and it's self catering but there is a restaurant which is ok but nicer options in Stamford, Oakham and surrounding villages if eating out. Overlooking Rutland waters and easy access to nice walks, cycle path, spa and swimming pool access included.

It's not that expensive when we go in Sept/Oct but if you fancy something nicer then http://www.hambletonhall.com

No problem if you like your fishing then there is places where you can hire a boat and head out on the waters we do a day fishing then a day mountain biking stopping off at every pub on the way around and then have a night out in Stamford, not the best I do admit but certainly an experience. eek

Depends how close to the Northamptonshire Border you want to be, but these two places are in the North of Rutland

http://www.greethamvalley.co.uk/self-catering/rutl...

http://www.rutlandluxurylodges.co.uk/

These are some new ones, also in Barnsdale, but the other hotel (Barnsdale Lodge rather than Barnsdale Hall)

http://www.rutlandretreats.co.uk/self-catering-cot...

They look a bit close to the main road to me, but the buildings look OK

When you say "lots of things to do" what type of things are you looking for?

One think you may be interested in is a tourist bus that travels around Rutland via the main tourist sites, its a "Hop on / Hop Off" service so pretty cheap way to get around the main things you might want to get to

Firstly thanks for all the replys, this is why I love PH.

As for things to do, it would only be simple stuff really to have something to do whilst we were there, as we d have 2 young kids with us 8 and 11.

Bu the greetham valley one is probably the one id go for as there does seem a lot to do there on its own.

ive forwarded all the suggestions on to the the others and I will report back after the trip.

once again thank you very much.

I think the activities they refer to for Greetham cover everything available in Rutland :-)

If you do go to Greetham the Plough pub in the village is excellent

For kids the most popular activites are bike riding - Rutland Cycling have a big fleet of hire bikes - http://www.rutlandcycling.com/pages/our-stores.asp...

There is also the RockBlok climbing area next to the Bike Hire centre at Whitwell -http://www.rutlandcycling.com/pages/rockblok.aspx

If you want something gentle the Rutland Belle : http://rutlandwatercruises.com/ is a good way to see the water, they do specific Osprey watching cruises if you are interested in that, but you need to book those in advance

Stamford and Oakham are nice market towns to wander about it, both have lots of tea / coffee stops and retail options - Stamford is a bit bigger than Oakham
