I'm looking at buying my first classic, and am favouring a Porsche 944, 928, or 968.

During the 18 months I've been looking (yes, I realise that's a bit indecisive,) I've perceived a sharp uptick in prices - are we seeing a bubble, and is this across the whole classic market or just for Porsche?

Yes, and no.

You've missed the boat by a mile.

There are still plenty of reasonably priced standard version front-engined Porsches for sale, so don't despair. It's the rare special edition models that have gone silly.

Depending on your budget I would suggest 944S2, any convertible or Turbo, 928S4 or any 968. A nice low mileage manual car in any of these varieties will at least hold their value. Pick of the bunch for me 968 Sport.

Happy hunting!

Yep, that matches my list, though 968 club sports have gone a bit silly.

A good 928 s4 is now above my budget, but the 944 s2 is achievable... just. I'm avoiding the turbos as I'm not planning to thrash it and maintaining a turbo could get pricy.

I wish they were fetching that, I have a mint 944 1985 with 34,000 Miles from new, Problem is it is Malaysia, but its never seen road salt, perfect body, paint, seats, 16 inch alloys, only problem it's an auto, Cars in Malaysia are 2 to 3 times UK prices, I want 12 K pounds for it, but no buyers, Lucky I don't need to sell, so can hold on to it and enjoy. When I say mint I mean mint, had a friend who is a well known UK classic car expert look at it the other week he could not believe the condition of the body. 30 years in the tropics, seen loads of rain but no salt.

The prices of earlier (even later) 911's are bonkers. I had many years ago a 1969 911 in blood orange, a italian import. It was in wonderful condition and I sold it for what I thought was a great price, £3500 to help with the deposit on our first house (think about 1997?). At the time I promised myself I'd buy another once I had the money, well I'm still waiting. To be honest it was great fun but not 75k fun.

My money would now be in a early 928 with the teledial wheels and mad interior.

so what are nice, low mileage cars actually worth ?

Wow, that's a bit dear. I remember going for a test drive in a similar era 944 about 10 years ago that was somewhere around £5k. Can't remember the mileage and it certainly wasn't as tidy as that one, but it was also 10 years younger then.

As Stu67 above, early spoiler less " pure" 928 would be where my money would be, but get one already "freshened up" as parts prices alone will make your eyes water!!rolleyes

Fab cars. Proper left field (and LHD!) car.

I spent ages about 8 years ago looking at 944's. Weirdly the S2 cars tended to be rustier. Possibly just a coincidence. The 3.0 engine might be a bonus but in the end I reckoned that a 2.7 with the oval dash was the pick of the bunch. I still think that early Fuchs wheeled 944 look fab thanks to chunky high profile tyres. All subjective. Ended up with a 924 Carrera GT. Sold it a year later and will never be able to afford one of them again. They've doubled in price in 7 years.

I sold a mint early 944 square dash on a B plate, 1985 last year for 4k. It was stunning only 50k on the clock and all original, interior was mint too.

Absolutely. They're still fairly sensible money, too. Plenty of fairly clean US imports out there.
