The prices for the air cooled 911's have gone silly, the front engined water cooled stuff is sensible in comparison.

My first Porsche was a 944 S2 which was a great car. Quick, loads of luggage space and great handling. A true practical classic.

Thirty years old and looks superb ... Do you miss it?

I've got a 1990 G reg 2.7 as a daily ... Lovely car to drive ...
I do miss it in some ways as it was a mint car in every way but I now have a 911 GT3 sat in the garage and that's another level in Porsche ownership,
I used to take the 944 to a lot of shows and it made me laugh the comments about the Pascha trim and that some people this many years down the line thought it was really cool now.
But the car was completely original right down to the Panasonic radio cassette,
The new owner has lowered it right down to the weeds and put polished cross spoke rims on it, it looks nice but for me has spoilt the originality of it.

Ive also been hunting for a decent starter porsche (968 911 928) and after speaking with a collector friend of mine who recent paid £60k for a 996 (911) turbo i realise my £35k wont go far in the 911 department unless its a run of the mill 911.But after viewing some early 996 (911) carrera 2/4`s ive realised that i can spend less and find a really nice low mileage example that may not make big bucks but allow me to have a nice car and some money over to modify/restore....

If you can find a good one they are great value for money in between the 944 and the GT3 I had a 1998 996 C2, 3 owners from new and 78k on the clock, was a really nice car.
I think the reputation of engine failures have really knocked the value of these but its a gamble you take with these.
If I was spending 35k now on a Porsche I think I would find the best 3.2 Carrera sport that I could, these are awesome cars, out of all the Porsches I have owned that is the one I miss the most.

For £35 000 I would be looking at buying some thing air cooled or a 996 turbo.

I am biased and prefer the air cooled stuff, but if I didn't have a 993 I would probably have the 996 turbo. It has always struck me as a very very competent all rounder, capable of being used on track, touring Europe at high speed, and nipping to the shops in or taking the kids to school.

The 993 is and has been my favourite of all the 911`s but im struggling to justify spending that kind of money for the level of performance they give.Ive never been in one (test driven 3.2 986 boxster,911 carerra 2 996) and wonder if they will be the drivers car i hope for.....i will look into having a test drive before i make my mind up

(sorry for thread hijack)

There are still plenty of reasonably priced standard version front-engined Porsches for sale, so don't despair. It's the rare special edition models that have gone silly.

Depending on your budget I would suggest 944S2, any convertible or Turbo, 928S4 or any 968. A nice low mileage manual car in any of these varieties will at least hold their value. Pick of the bunch for me 968 Sport.

Happy hunting!
Yep, that matches my list, though 968 club sports have gone a bit silly.

A good 928 s4 is now above my budget, but the 944 s2 is achievable... just. I'm avoiding the turbos as I'm not planning to thrash it and maintaining a turbo could get pricy.
I've just sold a low mileage 968CS for £32,995. It took the grand total of 24 hours to sell. That £££ buys a nice 996 Turbo, which is in a different league. Just shows how prices are a bit nuts !

I would agree with a nice 968 Sport, far better value.

I sold a 968 Sport in 2013 that took me over a month to sell and which went for £5,700. Although high miles it was fastidiously maintained and I'll wager drove every bit as well as the above example at six times the price.

I sold a mint early 944 square dash on a B plate, 1985 last year for 4k. It was stunning only 50k on the clock and all original, interior was mint too.

That auto shifter looks foul.

Auto shifter on the square dash ones isn't the prettiest... had a funny experience test driving a later dash auto when the shifter handle just came completely off at low speed.

Just buy a £10K Boxster S. Far nicer to drive than most if not all old 911s and it won't be full of rust or have 50s ergonomics.

I have considered that, but they're ubiquitous and I'm looking for something that bit different.

In order of value, for sub 10k would go:

996 3.4
944S2 (IMO 968s are overpriced in comparison for essentially the same car)
924S

The 914 is also a fun contender, can't believe how cheap these are. Although less practical than the others.

The 996 won't cost any more than the others to keep on the road so is a no brainer, but perhaps not "classic' enough yet.

Ive looked at a few sub 10k 996`s and theres quite a few dogs out there, many have been run on a shoestring and need plenty spending on them.It seems a few more grand makes all the difference with lots of low mileage 996`s going for 13k...i like the look of the early "fried egg" 996.Stock with amber indicators is how i like them...the ims failures are a issue on cars 1998 to 2008 (boxsters and 911 except turbo) so budgeting for this is a good idea (approx 5-8k) gulp!!

+1 for trying a boxster / early 996 as an alternative to a good front engine 4-pot. I'm currently driving a 987 boxster S and fancy a bit of change, but the more cars I test the more I find myself at a complete loss to try to find anything that goes, looks, sounds and above all handles anything like as well as a well sorted 987 - for anything like £10k... Takes a bit of time to find the right one though - they all might look similar, but they certainly don't all drive the same, but I 'spose that goes for most interesting cars... I kind of worry about running a 944 / 968 as a daily from a security point of view - aren't they the legendary mk2 golf (screw-driver special) door handles??

Just spent the day cleaning and polishing my recently acquired 928

Speaking from experience I would also think about the running costs associated with running whatever car you choose OP. I sounds like a 'good' 928 might be out of reach but a bad one will drain your finances like little else!

I quite like the idea of a 914 (or 916 if you find one?) - relatively rare and a bit different and I think they look good too.

Good luck finding something that fits the bill.

I know it's not the comparison you made but I was given a 987 Boxster when my 944 S2 went in for some work and I couldn't swap it back fast enough. Boxster did nothing at all for me in performance or handling and was simply a flimsy gee-gaw in comparison with the utterly solid, proper engineering of a 944.
