Google maps make this looks like an industrial estate setup as if the base is no longer in use.

Can somebody local confirm this and also if I will be able to get access to the runway on foot?

working nearby this week and would like to run a few lengths of the runway if its no longer in use and accessible on foot.

Definitely still functional. The "industrial Estate" is office buildings. No chance of getting to the runway. There are taxiways at the old RAF Upwood that are open access.

Certainly very active I was there in the summer. Although flying has ceased for the time being but I believe there are plans to sort the runway out for the Uni air squadron.

Yup, still used, mostly for training.

It might have changed recently but it's definitely where I learnt to fly.

Either way, to answer OP's question, its active!

Yeah the air experience flight/UAS forget which one it is has now sadly moved.

I suspect when saying it's still active, I'm guessing that FraserLFA means the base is still very much active MOD and therefore the runway is definitely not accessible to the OP, rather than meaning the runway itself is still active to flying ops.....??

Cambridge UAS and 5 AEF are now operating from RAF Wittering, and with that all flying ops at Wyton have ceased. The airfield however remains within 'the wire' (fence) of RAF Wyton which is still operational and open access to the runway is not possible.

I was referring to the comment about training.

The runway wasn't that active a couple of years ago. I did a handling day in the Westfield on it and the other end was full of containers.

Not necessarily, although Alconbury is more likely. One of Wyton's original runways (or rather, part of it) was leased/sold years ago to a business located on the airfield perimeter. They have a load of blue ISO containers there which can be seen in the top left of this image:

This maybe the 'industrial estate' that the OP was referring to.

I used to visit about once a month. There's a museum (or there was when I was there [2008 ish]) that's worth a tour in your lunch break if you can get in. A B-17 was going to land one of the days I was there, but it was diverted due to low cloud.

Aye, you're right. It was Alconbury. Wyton is where my daughter used to go to Sea Cadets.

I was a postman at RAF Wyton (and Brampton for the JARIC dept) during the summers of 1998-2001. biggrin
A number of times I'd pop over to the university air squadron for a lunchtime fly!... those were the days!
