Hi all

So it's my birthday soon, so I thought of asking for a lightweight aluminium jack to replace my aging Halfords 2.5 ton steel one.

Found myself looking at lightweight aluminium ones from SGS Engineering, Clarke etc. However, I couldn't believe my eyes when I weighed my current one (which I think is heavy), and found that is is lighter than the aluminium ones (19kg vs 26 kg).

How can this be?

The aluminium one is heavier.

Andy

The Alloy ones are much larger, they also have larger pistons for the hydraulics, this means more fluid is stored in it etc etc.

Thanks guys - hardly lightweight then, as advertised. Certainly not if my 5 year old full steel 2.5 ton Halfords cheapie is lighter!

It's all relative, find a steel jack that's low entry with massive height and large pistons for quick raising and you'll find it's much much heavier than the Alui one.

Indeed - I have one of these http://www.ac-hydraulic.dk/us/products/hydraulic-j... The mutt's nuts but weighs some 40kg and thus is not very portable!
