I'm looking into a retail business opportunity, mainly online, and need to choose a trading name. Initially it'll be back bedroom stuff - no intention of setting up a limited company unless it takes off. So, beyond googling it and companies house, what checks should I be doing for trading/brand names for the business?

As it's online I'd be looking more at matching URL's for web use and user names on Ebay / Amazon / Etsy depending on what type of venture you're planning. I've found that combining two words can help in this respect.

So 'Something' Productions, or 'Something' Services, etc. Give you a better chance of finding a usable URL that's not been used before.

Much more general, but the Companies Act 2006 has a list of things you cannot call your business. Might be worth quickly double checking you don't fall foul of any of them.

Obviously cant use offensive language. Possibly less obviously are not being able to pretend to be endorsed by the state, government or public authority.
