I buy all my tyres from tyreleader.co.uk. Germany based but guaranteed free delivery in 48-72 hours on stock items. Yet to find cheaper for top end tyres even factoring in fitting/balancing costs

I did a bit of research on the bmw marking when buying supersports for my M3. I changed wheel size so went for the f80 fitting, which was available in the * marking. Got in touch with michelin about the differences
Long story short, as they were initially really vague, the * marking in the particular size I was looking at was developed for the f80 m3, and had a slightly harder compound.
I think that depending on the specific tyre, it may be modified for
- tread pattern (less often I think)
- fit (May have more rim protection, thicker / thinner sidewall for rigidity or comfort)
- compound (harder/softer for tread life or grip)
So the outcome is that they're specifically tuned for the model they were developed for. It's unlikely that you'd get a straight answer even from their product tech people, they just say 'they were specifically designed for your bmw and we recommend that you fit them'.
I spotted mine from the fact that the A/B/C markings (fuel, wet braking etc like your washing machine) were different between the * and the non * tyre

+1 for this. Cheaper and fast delivery with no issues.I took the tyres to the local tyre fitter and got him to fit them for £20 for all four. He had not balanced them right as it turns out (wobble over 90mph - not that i would know..), so took it to to BMW main dealership and they balanced them for free.
