What is this scam, sorry supplementary charge business? We're looking for a rental place in Italy in May/June and in the majority of instances the upfront payment bears little resemblance to the final cost, eg "...from 36Euros per night, then by the time we've added 20e each for towels and linen, 40e for final cleaning and even in a couple of places charges for using pool, and would you believe for electricity the final cost is more like 300+ euros a week instead of the starting figure of 252!

Hotels (even "budget" ones) don't charge for towels and cleaning, so why do rental places do it/get away with it?

So let's get this straight....
It says "from €36", you considered booking on that premise, and now it turns out it's quite a long way "from" €36?
Isn't that called marketing?

Indeed, when you choose "Sort by price: Low to High" you're going to get this problem.

The problem is guests want flexibility. Some will be quite happy to bring their own linen and towels in order to save a few pounds. Some will turn up in a Punto or fly in, so can't carry the extra gear. Why should people pay for the pool in winter.

Etc!

Yes, I'm not completely daft, I do understand this, what I'm saying is that the whole concept is wrong and in some cases very misleading. The budget airlines took a hammering for a similar pricing strategy, so why is it wrong for them and OK for rentals? I reiterate if you wanted to book a hotel and chose a room rate and then later found out that that rate didn't include essentials like your bedding, towels and electricity, I think you'd be a bit miffed.

Try airbnb, lots of great owner run properties at good prices. Decent mobile app as well, you can contact the owner and check prices, but usually it's all pretty clear up front.

Thanks for the tips. I've tried airbnb, it is better than some, I'm on to Ownersdirect now.

Because they all do it!

It's like all the promotional crap done by UK Supermarkets as that is all they know, hence why Aldi and Lidl are cleaning up and growing so fast with their simple pricing.
