MX5 mk1 Prices on the up

I wouldn't be suprised if the MK1s are on the up - the MILs MK1 was a right stter and a rust bucket, mould in the boot, etc. Even with a failed MOT it sold to the first buyer for £1000 flat.
I should hope it did sell to the first buyer! There might be legal issues if you then sold it to a second buyer It appears prices are really on the up. This is a nice 1995 Mk.1, but with 79000 on the clock it's unlikely to be concours, yet it went for £3360 at auction on 25th Feb this year.

Mk1 prices are absolutely on the rise. When I got my throttle bodied one I paid £400 with a years MOT and three months tax. Obviously it wasn't anywhere near the spec it now is but it was rust free and had a near new Cobalt exhaust and bilstein suspension. That same car now would be close to £2k and it's currently insured (mods included) for £5k.
There are some proper stters out there, mostly going through the hands of the drift kiddies but decent cars are absolutely on the rise. One day I might actually be able to cover the many thousands of pounds I've spent on mine!

Prices of nice original rust free Mazda MX5 Mk1's are rising and the launch of new Mk4 Mazda MX5 is only going to fuel that demand as they try to capture the elements that made the original so good.
Mazda City has 100k mile Eunos imports at £3,300.
Good imported cars are are going for circa £4,000 to £4,500 from Goodwood sportscars[url]http://www.goodwoodsportsc...
Sporting Cars have a british racing green 1997 Mk1 Mazda MX5 1.8i Monza with 40k miles at £4,475.
Silverbrooks have a red 1996 Mk1 Mazda MX5 1.8i with 65k miles at £4,990.
On the Mazda MX5 Owners Club there's a concours show winning 1996 Classic Red 1.8i Mk1 with 19k miles with an asking price of £10,000.
The best cars will start to be snapped up by car collectors as even at £10k they're still such an affordable usable classic!

That is crazy money!!!
I've just bought one for £400, so there all still dirt cheap ones around - All standard, even the stereo. Bit tatty, but solid
I never thought these would ever go for classic money,
You'd have said the same about Mk1 Escorts or early Minis back in the day. I've thrown cars away that now would be worth thousands. Look at any old two-seater sports car ever made and the survivors are now making good money. MX5's will be just the same, especially MK1 and 2. Just give it a few years. Most will have been scrapped or chavved and good originals will fetch good money.I've just bought one for £400, so there all still dirt cheap ones around - All standard, even the stereo. Indeed Lazza. Even 'grey porridge' cars like the Austin Cambridge are now fetching money. I go to Anglian Car Auction's classic auction regularly. Have a look at the results of the last one and weep:

Quite a few weren't as good as they looked. A lot had been blown over and prepped for auction. Still fetched the money though. I think a bit of a bubble is building. But quality will always sell well. There's a 14k mile Mk1 Mazda MX-5 1.8 iS (1995) for £15k in the PH classifieds!
