Key member of staff wants to go from 5 to 2 days a week for 15 months for a valid reason, someone will need to be brought in to do the work or we have a reshuffle.

Anyone had anything similar ?

I've handled a variety of different requests. I suggest you understand the reasons for the request and the specific rationale for their requested pattern. There is often more colour than is initially described which drives certain behaviour or requests. Quite often there is an alternative that may be more mutually convenient. How about for instance 4 half days rather than 2 full days? Work from home options?

Any request, however reasonable has to fit with business needs. You have an obligation to consider the request, not grant it.

Ask them to hire and train some one to do the other three days,

Pro Rata their salary down to two days and crack on.

Would this be a problem for you?
