I have a 1956 vehicle, as such it has a 6 digit (three number/three letter) plate. My question is, if I transfer that number onto another vehicle, would I be issued with another 6 digit for the original car?

I think there is a good chance DVLA would. I had a 1953 bike imported a few years ago, they put a 3 number/3 letter plate on that.

Don't they then give you a non-transferable number, so you can't just make a living out of selling the old plates.

Yes, you will. It'll be one of the pool of age-related plates, probably an xSV or whatever they're on now. And, yes, it'll probably be non-transferable.

Can I ask a similar registration number question.
How can I find out if registration numbers EDP 672 and WRD 98 are still being used or are available? they are the numbers of my parents old cars which are long gone so putting the make of car into DVLA brings "not known".

There's another site where you can just put the reg nos in and it'll tell you I'd it is assigned to a car ... Someone will know the URL ... It's on another computer, not this one ...

EDP672 isn't insured on anything. It might be on something SORNed, or on retention.
WRD98 is on a white 1971 v12 E-type, insured, taxed and tested.

I cheat by letting someone like Blackcircles do it for you, e.g. put the number you're looking for, WRD98, at the end of the url http://www.blackcircles.com/order/reglookup/wrd98 - it's on a VW Golf

OK, here is another workaround. The DVLA will not allow you to search their database without the make of car, but they will sell this info to third parties so here is what to do, and just to clarify, I have no financial gain here, just a useful life hack.

Step 1: visit www.mycarcheck.com, type in the reg number, they will helpfully give you the make as held on the dvla database they have bought.
Step 2: visit the DVLA website www.vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk and type in the Reg Number and EXACT make from the previous website.
Voila! you will now see if this old reg is still in use, or circulation, and on what car.

So your first Reg EDP672 is lost in the Ether, its not on any car, you could get it reassigned through the DVLA if you have an old logbook or other proof you have that car in the garage.
Second Reg WRD98 is, as noted above, on a 1971 Jaguar V12 in White, taxed and Tested, so not available to you.

Hope this helps!
Justin.

I think I'll take the word of the motor insurance database and DVLA over a tyre firm, ta.

I'm pretty sure that's how the infamous " 1 AN " came about as a no transferable number on the Moggy 1000.....!

Probably wise. I don't think Blackcircles could fit a set of VW Golf tyres onto a Jaguar sports car smile

I was fancying a fleet of matching numbers on my cars, but if I can only get one off the truck, it can stay as it is.

Thanks for the replies guys.
Something tells me I will not be able to get WRD98,unless I pay shed loads for an E Type !!

Now then,EDP672 is no longer in use, lost, gone or what ever? It was on my mums E93A Ford Anglia and that must have dissolved years ago,all I have is a 60 year old photo.
Is there any way I can get that number from DVLA to use on my Mercedes??

Nope. They don't reissue "dead" numbers, just in case that Anglebox is ever found and restored.

You used to need a current MOT before you could transfer - but 1956 cars are exempt, not sure how that works now.
