I'm happy to buy new, or used from somewhere like WEX. I have around £400 to spend on a camera, it must be a Canon as I already have the 100-400 lens for it.

What would you recommend?

I looked at a 100D tonight, seems decent, is it? Currently brand new in John Lewis for £349.

How about a 7D? Used for around £350.

Is a 5D better than a 7D?

Thanks all.

What are you going to shoot.

7D is much better for birds and sport. 5d probably a little better for portraits.

If you want AF and tracking then a 60/70d or 650d up or 7d would be best.

Depends what you want to use the camera for? Without knowing the exact usage (and the 100-400 is a must) probably a second-hand 7D or 70D.

I went for an EOS M2 instead of the 100D - it's smaller and easier to hold (but with the same sensor and AF).
Neither is going to balance well with a 100-400.

I have a 100D - good little camera but would be tiny on the end of a 100-400

What about a second hand 60D ?

5D is full frame and old, 7D is a crop but also long in the tooth.

I'd go for a 7D. It works really well with the 100-400 and is bombproof in build quality.

Used 7D sounds a perfect match for the sort of things a 100-400 is good at.

Thanks for all your replies. I will be going for the 7d. The 70d is a cracking camera, but it is more expensive, and that's a slippery slope- before I know it I'm wandering out the shop with all the to kit spin

The cameras work is quite varied-

Night shoots

Military aviation, mainly fast jets

Sunsets

Landscapes etc

The 100d caught my eye because it's so small and light, making it easier to carry up hills or around cities.
