First of all, you can't start such an awesome sounding thread with such little information biggrin

What is this you are building?
Is it an original 2.7 RS being restored or a recreation/replica?
If its a replica, what is it based on?

Colour looks awesome by the way thumbup

Sorry are you telling me that you swapped a 997 GT3 for the blue shell in the pics?

We need lots more details, lot more, this is the internet, were nosey Parker's

Ok, Ok….here goes

I am having built by 911Rennsport, a recreation of a 1972 2.7 RS Carerra which is being backdated from a 1989 3.2 Carrera G50 Coupe Sport. I had a choice of two donor cars but decided to go for the one with the G50 gearbox. A full list of specification would be a long one, but basically everything is stripped out and the car will have a new bonnet, brand new early front wings, engine cover with ducktail to replicate the RS and both front and rear RS bumpers.

On the mechanical side the engine will be completely rebuilt to a blueprint standard with ssi manifolds and a twin back box. I have chosen not to have a roll bar as the car is for weekend use and European road trips, so will be set up accordingly.

I still have a few choices to make with regards to the interior but am keen to keep it as original as possible.

Yes I did chose to replace my GT3 with the shell in the pics, but having seen a finished example of a another 911Rennsport car it gave me the confidence to do the deal. I suppose only time will tell, it was a little scary at the time.

As I mentioned previously I had no idea that I was going to go to Carfest South, meet the guys from 911Rennsport and end up seriously considering selling my GT3. But I did chat it over with a couple of close friends, one who has done almost exactly the same thing in selling his black GT3 for an older air cooled 911 and another who has owned older air cooled Porsches and was with me that fateful weekend.

The attached car has been my screen saver on my pc and I feel it is one of the most beautiful looking cars I have ever seen, hence me choosing gulf blue. Obviously mine in not an RSR but hopefully won't look too dissimilar when finished.





So now the car is back from paint, hopefully things will start to look better and better as the weeks go by.

Well the car in your screensaver looks fantastic and I love the blue, ballsy move swapping the gt3 for a project but fair play to you for having a punt. I hope you end up with your dream car.

Some alarm bells ringing there for me too. The shell's stripped, but someone couldn't be arsed to strip the loom out ? By my reckoning it would take as long to mask up properly as to remove it. Front strut top mounts masked ?
And the freshly painted shell left out in the rain ??

Not a pic I'd post.

I like to see a colour change backdate start from a bare shell on stands. The blue loom illustrates a lack of detail from the off. Not to mention that a G50 coupe is a desirable machine today.

A stinky 915 3.2 would have been a better base car to go on authenticity wise...

Can you let us know who did that so we can avoid them?!

Isn't a good advert for their services is it, only a few hours more to fully strip the HVAC, loom, suspension etc and do a proper job? What is the plan, mask off the body and spray that front cross member and fuel pump silver?

Hope you got this very cheap!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm

Scary indeed.

I might be tempted to pull the project and find someone with real passion to finish it.
The sunroof should have been deleted too.

Sorry, I'm with the naysayers too. In fairness it IS quite a bit more work to fully strip the car, but surely the end result and value would be worth it. I'd have sprayed the interior too as it leaves more options for you or a future owner to strip it for a more lightweight look.

I think I'd have got some seam sealer in those gaps under the fuel tank too...looks like a moisture trap to me!

But...it's easily sortable at this stage and is going to be a stonking car!

Ask them to pull off one of the spring plates and show you how rusty inside the torsion tube is and how knackered the rubber spring plate bush is (which is vulcanised onto the arm). It will still handle like a worn out 27 year old Carrera unless you go for new factory spring plates or upgraded ones from Elephant or Wevo. Inner sills and kidney bowl area is a serious concern on these cars too. Another potential problem is the rubbery Wurth underseal, you find pockets of rust underneath it, needs a full strip in my view.

Fwiw, when I restored my E in 1989 I colour changed it from Cockney Brown to GPW (yes, I know it wasn't the right colour...). I removed everything in the front compartment Including the wiring running from battery boxes to car. It wasn't a huge task to accoomplish - the loom easily pulls out of position as long as you are careful in bending back the lugs that keep it in position.

Do it once, and do it right.

Ex Califorian and Canadian 2.4E with 928 seats and 3.2 Carrera engine.





Fully stripped.



Interior sound deadening removed by hand.



All underbody sealant and corrosion protection removed by hand......



Acid dipped



Sunroof delete .......



Tig'ed cage install and seam welding.

Cage install, new outer sill and door jamb (with original M8 stamping frenched into new panel) and wing mounting flange (fnarrr)



Corroded outer sill cut away to expose solid inner sill and jacking point smile The shell was intrinsically very solid, with a rot free floorpan, inner sills and kidney bowls. the rear panel/crossmember had poorly repaired accident damage, the outer sill were rotten, the front panel had been replaced (badly) and the car previously has been fitted with aftermarket air conditioning. The front tank crossmember was rotten, as were the front A arm front mountings.



Front inner flitch seam welding, strut brace brackets installed



Fire extinguisher brackets and tunnel to rear bulkhead strengthening plates



Tig welding .....



100mm "Big turrets" (allow the fitment of coilovers rather than using torsion bars) being installed with crossmember in situ ......





Sunroof delete complete, new front and rear panels and cage installed.



Front flitch seam welding and anti roll bar mount plate strengthening.



More Tig ....
