Respectable on a budget
Discussion
I'm just hypothetically pondering the question, it's not a situation I'm in myself. - you have 5-7k to spend on a car which you have to drive to a job interview in, where you'll be parking it in front of the window the interviewers look out of.
what do you buy? what car looks classy / subtle and is difficult to criticise, and also helps you look like you earn more than you do, given the low purchase price?

Lexus of some sort?
Scare enough on the roads that with a personalised plate most people wouldn't recognise it as being an "old" shape, and not the latest model. Polish the st out of it before turning up of course!
The challenging bit being "look like you earn more than you do"... smart and presentable on that budget is easy enough. Any Merc, Audi, BMW, etc. is going to just look like an old model to most people.

If they don't like cars it's a respectable diesel Volkswagen and if they do it's a V10 luxury machine.

Volvo V70 or a Subaru Legacy - totally classless and under the radar.
+1, or a Saab. Classy enough to appear financially stable and comfortable, but not so showy it looks like you don't need/want the job. And of course, you don't want to turn up in a car better than the interviewer because you're automatically screwed.
