Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of the relative performance of the various cooling fans available?

Having a nosey online for a 10" pull fan to mount behind the rad there seems to be the cheapy ebay universal jobbies for £20 or so, Mishimoto look good value at £50 with their stated similar cfm to the £80+ Spal/Pacet/Kenlowe top of the range items.

Most 10" fans seem to be rated at 80W so I guess it's all about how the blade design turns the power into air shifted. Do you get what you pay for to a certain extent? I'm feeling the Mishimoto option might be the ticket.

they are so cheap because they are cheap / poor designed.

good quality fans do NOT have an universal blade design for push or pull
good quality fans run short but efficiant--> shorter run time --> shorter power draw --> less stress for alternator --> better for engine-power.

and with a well choosen size you still have some reserves, in case you want to uprate your engine in the future

I agree.

Buy a good quality one. They tend to have less current draw for the same flow as a cheapo, are quieter, will last longer and be all round better made.

+1

I wouldn't believe any of the figures given for air-flow or power usage of the cheapo ones. They're poor quality, knocked out in some back street Chinese sweat shop.

You will also find that fans from the known brands will be better protected against water ingress and will last a lot longer.

Kenlowe fans are good certainly but they are not the only quality brand available.

Cheers all. After a bit more digging the Mishimoto fans look surprisingly like the cheapo universal specials with a shiny plate screwed on top. That coupled with the fact they talk of swapping cable polarity and switching the blade around to convert between push and pull has put me off somewhat. A few internet warriors aren't happy with their Kenlowes so I guess they have some good and some not so good products in the range.

Nice Spal 10" curve blade puller to be procured I feel, nothing bad to be said about them that I can see.
