Hi all,

wonder if anyone can help with suggestions on this.........

Staying away during the week and using hotel wi fi with the common login page.

I'd like to be able to use the wi fi on my XBox One, but the XBox will not allow the entry of username/password details as IE will not start up until the system is actually connected to a 'net connection.

I have tried spoofing the mac address of the connected tablet or android phone as suggested by some forums, but it appears since a recent update, the xbox wont hold the new MAC address at reboot (which it forces after a change of MAC) and returns to the original setting.

My ideal would be to find a router that would enable me to logon to the hotels wi fi via a web splash screen, then share the signal either via wi fi or ethernet.

Have also been experimenting at home with using ICS on XP, but whenever I try to use this, the XBox claims that it cant access DNS?

All suggestions gratefully received!

Can you not do this using your phone? Connect the phone to the wifi then set the phone up as a wifi hot spot. Never tried this so no idea if it is possible. .. but worth a try!

Eta...looking at it on my phone I don't think it will work that way. ..sorry.

I haven't had much luck finding a router that will do that (well, one that is small and portable).

You can achieve it with spoofing the MAC address, but the other way round: Change the PC to be that of the Xbox?

Nah, the phone only has 1 wi fi chip, so when you share wi fi that's used up, hence you can only share the 3g signal

And unfortunately 3 are obviously wise to xbox as once you try and share to the xbox
the speed drops like a stone (chances are it recognises it as a Windows device and throttles accordingly)

Hi

Cheers for this - how do you change the mac via windows then?

Also, I assume it (the xbox) will then just automatically accept the wi fi signal once selected?

Have a read : http://www.howtogeek.com/192173/how-and-why-to-cha...

Once you have logged into the hotel wifi with your computer it shouldn't ask you to reauthenticate on the Xbox.

If you have a laptop, then I can highly recommend Connectify.

http://www.connectify.me

The free version will be good enough for your intended use.

When I was in halls at university I used to run Connectify (www.connectify.me - the free version is adequate) on my laptop to enable me to use the Wifi on my phone, tablet, and Xbox.

Prior to that I had to use 3G on my phone, and spoof the Xbox MAC address to the laptops MAC (which was registered on the network) and swap the ethernet between the two.

Worked VERY well, would have gladly paid for the basic functionality if need be, as when we connected a router the networking techs used to disable the flats internet connection until removed - this didn't flag up anything to them and worked great.

I tried this in a similar situation to get a PlayStation running.
It didn't work. The provider or router or whatever recognised that I was sharing the connection and it wouldn't provide any connection.

I've no idea if that's the case in this hotel.

I use one of these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL-WR702N-Universa...

Multiple devices, one charge from the hotel.

I've also got one of the TP Link devices, which does work well where there is a wired connection in the room but I struggled to get it working with a wireless connection to the hotel network.

With connectify it's really simple to share a wireless connection and I've never had a problem connecting any device to the connectify hotspot.

Matt, what you need its a travel router that supports WISP mode, (Wireless Internet Service Provider) my go to device at the moment is the asus wl-330 which is about the size of a pen drive and can be used as a usb network card, USB Wifi adapter, wifi hotspot (wisp) and wifi access point (ie wifi to wired internet). Edimax also do one which i have as a back up device but haven't used in anger yet.

to use the asus in your situation you would just need to plug it into a USB power source, log into it from a tablet or pc and set it up to access the hotel WIFI. then on your tablet access the internet and accept the hotels terms, then join all your devices to your own personal wifi bubble. That last step will be automatic once each device has joined for the first time the same as it is when on your home wifi.

For me its invaluable when i turn up in a hotel and i only have to set up wifi on the router and all my other devices just work from that and if there is any wifi fee, I only pay for one of those as well.

Both devices are WIFI N 150 so although not the fasted still pretty good, and very good range considering their size and either come in at £15-20 so they only have to save you one extra hotel wifi cost to pay for themselves.

That's cool. The TP-Link one is the one I looked at and it doesn't work as a wireless repeater. The Asus one looks as though it'll do the trick.

The asus and edimax ones dont work as a repeater per se, in that they don't rebroadcast the same ssid to extend a network but rather you set up your own wireless network (ssid) which all your devices join and then rather than have a cable to connect to the internet the routers can latch onto another wifi network. There are some limitations in that most of them only have one radio so they will run your wifi network on the same channel as the wifi they up link to but in reality that's rarely a problem.

There are some quirks with the asus with its latest firmware that may make the edimax a better option, but i haven't used the edimax one enough yet to figure out its idiosyncrasies and on an earlier firmware the important issues are not present with the asus.

Thanks for all the info chaps!

Feeling like a clown - I 'kickstarted' connectify but haven't used it for well over a year (forgot about it!)

Dave - haven't seen you in an age mate - hope you're keeping well!

This works for me wired or wireless. Plus can share from a USB stick as well
