I've started a thread in the Speed, Plod & the Law forum explaining this in more detail, but I thought I'd flag it here too.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Basically the average cameras on the A127 are linked to the cameras on the A130 (Canvey Way). If you come off the A127 and reach the first camera on Canvey Way quicker than you should, you'll be getting a ticket!

Wonder how many other cameras are set up like this?

Presumably there aren't new ave cams on the bit of the A130 between the 127 & the 13 (I'm not using that bit of road very much at the moment).

I'm yet to meet anyone who has been done by the average speed cameras on the A127. I've been up and down there more than a few times with mates at silly speeds on the way back from the seafront during the summer and no one has heard a peep about it. Same with the A13 ones, it's always mates of mates who have been done and I've never personally met anyone or seen a ticket.

Working on the assumption that a multi million pound company that relies on ANPR for revenue struggles to capture 25% of the traffic (Dartford toll) then what are the chances that any of these average speed cameras work? The only reason that the CC works is because there's a few hundred cameras in it and you only need to be seen by one, they've got 4 lanes of slow moving traffic on the bridge and can't make it work.

I think they are off at times or they have a big 'leeway' because I know soooo many people who still think they are speed camera's and not average check camera's (family st box drivers) and speed between each with no ticket.
Watch as peoples break lights are on then they accelerate after.

A collegue of mine said he got done last year on the A127 stretch towards Rayleigh and ended up doing one of those speed aware courses.

Also seen something about it on the Echo website a while ago :

MORE than 4,000 motorists have been given tickets after being caught driving too fast by average speed cameras on the A127.
The figures, obtained by the Echo, put to bed long-held suspicions that the cameras do not actually work.

Between April 2011 and March this year, 2,411 drivers were caught flouting the 50mph speed limit, which covers the dual carriageway from Nevendon, at Basildon, to the western boundary of the borough of Southend.
Some 90 per cent of those 2,177 motorists opted to attend a speed awareness course, where they pay to attend a class highlighting the dangers of speeding, instead of paying the £75 fine and receiving points on their licence.

Of the remainder, 234 were issued with a fine or were prosecuted in court.
The figures, from Essex Police, show an increase on the 1,866 caught speeding in the average speed zones between April 2010 and March 2011.

Of those, 658 attended the speed course while 1,208 were fined or prosecuted.

The cameras were put up in 2009, but ever since many motorists have doubted whether they were working.

Initially, problems with cables meant the cameras were not live for several months after installation.

..However, motorists’ suspicions were also aroused by a lack of control boxes, which collect roadside data, while others thought the cameras hadn’t even been plugged in.

Drivers also claim the cameras on the Rayleigh Weir stretch appear to be the only ones that display a red glow at night, likely to be caused by an infrared system that is used to catch speeders after dark.

An Essex County Council spokesperson said: “In the first two years after installation there was a 58 per cent reduction in the number of collisions resulting in a person being killed or seriously injured, with no fatal collisions.

“As the highways authority, the County Council is confident these cameras work to deter motorists from driving above the legal speed limit.”

An Essex Police spokesman said: “The best safety cameras are the ones that take no fines at all as they deter drivers from speeding.”

The Echo reported earlier this month that transport chiefs had revealed plans to extend the area covered by average speed cameras to take in the whole south Essex stretch of the A127.

The next wave of devices will cover from the Fortune of War roundabout at Laindon, to the junction with the M25.

The cameras on the A130 have been replaced, and yes, they are now rear facing. Got to be honest, I think its a good thing. The speed at which some of those bike go through between the opposing lanes of traffic is quite frightening sometimes.

Stay safe. I've even seen numpties do a three-point turn on Canvey Way when they realise they've taken the wrong turn on Sadlers Farm yikes

Cheers for that, yep there are some people out there with zero awareness

Seen all the cameras now in the car turned round. It's done it's job. You won't see bikes go through there fast anymore

Hi all I know this is an old post but have to post somewhere as I'm new here and won't let me start my own topic was just wondering as I'm a little paranoid is the 50mph camera at the dik turpin linked to the national speed limit camera at nevendon interchange/roundabout as my cousin was driving my car and I looked at my Speedo and he was doing 80 after the national sign then said he forget it was average along here but there is an average speed check sign about 1/2 or even 3/4 mile past the sign that says national speed limit just wanna know as I'm getting a little paranoid lol
Thanks

They could well be linked. I suppose all you can do is wait to see if a NIP turns up. Even if one does drop through your letterbox, you’ve got nothing to worry about as it wasn’t you driving.

I got an NIP for doing 58 in the 50 average zone on the A127, coming back from Heathrow 18/24 months ago - always presumed it was at the start of that stretch past the Dick Turpin,so presume you might also get a little gift in the post frown

I drive the A127 everyday between Basildon and the Fairglen Interchange. What puzzles me is that the speed limit changes halfway between cameras, What’s the point of that?

They will almost certainly know how long it will take to get between the last 2 cameras at the 2 speed limits and bill you accordingly if you don't spend enough time on the road.

I still maintain that this is the worst piece of road I've ridden on or driven on in Europe because of the cameras and I'd like to see the people responsible hanged from the fking things.
