I've got an MGBGT Auto in sandglow.
1972, its in as new condition, with 55,000 miles on the clock.
Really clean, and untouched.
Its been garaged its entire life.
No rips or tears in the upholstery.
On rostyles.
Honeycomb grille.
No sunroof.
Wadge of paperwork.
I was thinking of asking £5k for it.

What are these worth?
I thought it was quite rare.

I like the GT, a car that to me is not trying to be anything that it isn't, and I am sure you are right that an Auto is pretty rare. My preference would be for a manual to be honest. But for 5k it sounds a fair price.
What are you going to replace it with ?

A friend has a BGT Auto, same year, in white. Paid £5.5k for it, which was too much for this particular car as it's had some awful repairs completed; It's average condition. Some auto classics are, in fact, quite rare and do appeal to some folk...so £5k for a shark nose grille BGT seems right. If it's genuinely in tip top condition I would go below this figure, if only for the rarity factor.

It's a mistake to equate rare with valuable and an auto will only appeal to someone who needs to drive one either because they only have an automatic licence or perhaps because of a physical limitation, nobody will pay 5k for it otherwise.

Put it on ebay with a reserve you can live with and cross your fingers.

You never know, someone might want the parts to restore a Marina automatic then dump a standard manual in it and sell it on.

I'd say it's a fair price, possibly a tad more?

You don't see a great deal of good honest mgb's (let alone autos) in original condition, most have been restored and many not that well. When I was looking there are an awful lot of dogs out there at similar prices,

Ebay or carandclassic would be my shout!

Prices seem to have risen like all other classics. Decent later rubber bumper cars are being advertised for more than that amount.
In most other colours, I'd say it was worth more if it as tidy as you say, but some will like the colour but I think it might impact on price. Go a tad higher and see if you get any interest. smile
