So my reliable steed (touch wood) has reached 80,000 miles and I am about to get a brake fluid change done. I am thinking about getting it done by an independent garage. Whilst I know its conditional based servicing, Is it worth me asking for anything else to be checked?

As you know I suspect, your milage is no distance for these cars, 2-300,000 miles should be no problem. When was the last major service carried out? Pollen filter, fuel filter and as mentioned, brake fluid tend to be forgotten, just a general inspection is all that is necessary with the above.
Most important of all is the very best engine oil is used and replaced once a year with a BMW oil filter.

Thanks, yep the rest was done around 2 years ago (2013). I will be doing an oil service this year though (3000 miles to go and its been 2 years). I was just think more whether I should get them to check things like suspension ball joints etc. Anything that others have done from a 80,000 mile service either from Bmw or from an indie.

That sort of thing gets checked at the MOT. I take mine to the local BMW agent (Sytners) who charge £35.

I would never rely on an MOT / hope things are OK. Get the BMW specialist to do a all round check for safety issues / wear. They know what wears at what mileage.
Get them to check the suspension knuckles / bushes. If either are out, they will trash a good set of tyres very quickly.
MOT examples:
My E38 740 passed it's MOT with two broken rear springs (after I had asked them to pay special attention to the rear as it did not feel right).
Secondly, My BMW specialist picked up that I had one corroded rear brake line that would need attention before the next MOT. It passed it's subsequent MOT with no advisories. The brake pipe was in a poor state and would not have lasted another 12 months. It was only one brake pipe to the rear brakes on my 650, the other was fine (both replaced).
SWMBO'd 2002 330 convertible is serviced by our specialist. Last service, they tested that the roll over hoops deployed effectively, which is not a MOT test. I hope we never need them, but if we do, it would be nice if they worked! eek
I would not rely on a MOT test / hope for the best scenario. I think it is a combination of MOT + good specialist.

The above is exactly why I take my car to Sytners for the MOT.

I'm sure they'll find things wrong, if they have half a chance.
