Got a Motorola Moto G (2nd gen) at Christmas as a replacment for a Galaxy S2 - I have a sim only contract from Virgin.
Just upgraded to Lolipop and it flys - much better than the S2, very pleased with it

£140 from Tesco:

I recommended this for a mate of mine a few weeks back. Less than half the price of my Moto X but it doesn't feel like half the phone side by side. Great value.

To be fair, iOS has come a long way and it's getting pretty complete in terms of functionality.

Other than that, I'd be thinking along the lines of:
  • Sony Xperia Z3 (available in compact if big phones aren't your thing)
  • Oneplus One (the VFM makes it really hard to overlook, and CM is a great take on android)
  • Moto X (I just need to look into this, I'm a big fan of the Moto G)

It was between the G3; which I ended up with and the Moto X, what swayed me towards the G3 was the camera on the X had pretty poor reviews and I do like a good camera on my phone, I came from a Lumia 920 which had a superb camera for its time.

Couldn't find a Moto X anywhere to try either.
The Moto X's camera is a significant improvement over my Nexus 5 so I'm pleased with it, but if you had an excellent camera in your earlier phones it might feel like a downgrade. The X has a clever camera trick though: to open the camera app on a locked phone, just flick your wrist twice. All in all it's just a really nice phone to live with day to day, with a few very subtle enhancements over the 100% stock android on my Nexus 4 and 5. I paid an extra £20 for a brown leather back which looks and feels nice. Everything you see and touch is glass, metal and leather. I carry it in my back pocket and there's zero torsional flex in the frame at all. It feels as strong as my last iPhone before I jumped ship (a 4S).

Personally, I never try phones in shops. If you buy online you can return. Just pick a retailer with good customer service e.g. Amazon.

New Z3 Compacts at the minute can be got for £200 sim free if you decide on a Sony.

My 5s crashes constantly and battery is down to about 8 hours.
Sounds odd, what is it crashing on? I've got a 5 that I've had since launch and never had a problem with it.

Messaging/iMessage/Gmail app/safari.

It also randomly turn off at a random point when the battery is <50% and refuse to turn back on until mains power is connected, where it will then show 60%+ life.

Had a closer look at the Z3 and Moto X last night, looks like it'll be the Sony as I'm a bit of a Sony fanboy...

Funny, my 4S had exactly the same after the 7.x update. But at 30%. Took me a while to "get used to it", but very annoying nonetheless.

Can't go wrong with the Xperia phones, but all phones can have faults though.

My iPhone 5 had this (as did many). They recalled them and gave me a replacement.

If you're considering Android I'd really suggest you look at either the current HTC One or the new M9 when it's launched. The best build quality IMHO, decent Android implementation and I'd say it blows away the likes of the G3. Plenty of reviews out there listing the current model as the best phone in the world.
