Doing my first UK trackday for about 4 years on Sunday - aaaaargh, how much hassle are they compared to the Euros??!!
Anyway, can anyone tell me what the (electrical) power situation is at Mallory and what time they are likely to open the gates?
Power is st. There are a couple of power points dotted around the paddock. Take one of hose round connector things and a long lead!Anyway, can anyone tell me what the (electrical) power situation is at Mallory and what time they are likely to open the gates?
Gates open early IIRC around 6:30
Trackday report incoming
Oulton park on Saturday, for a change obviously. I turned up to a wet and cold Oulton at 7am and a slightly confusing set up where half the garages seemed to be locked and there were a load of bikes in the others and trailers and all sorts of weird stuff. Anyway I found a garage unloaded and went to sign on. By the time I got back there were so many bikes in the garage that I couldn't get mine out, so was pretty pissed off.
Onto the briefing and it turned out that this Trackday has been chosen as the annual Army outing, which sounds great, but is actually a bit weird as there is an attitude around the garages that doesn't normally exist.
Still onto the actual track stuff and it was eventful. The first session was damp so most were plodding around and I called it quits after a couple of laps after the sighting laps. The next session was a washout as the heavens opened and I gave it a miss. Then the day warmed up considerably and the fun began.
I fitted a new rear after dinner as mine was sliding all over the place. The only tyre they had in 200 was a Pirelli slick so on that went to compliment the Dunlop D211 front and off I went. It was a freak of a day. The riding in Fast was a lottery, there were a few really quick lads and then the rest were a mix of Novice and Inters riders with overstated opinions of their ability. I had fun, but it was a bit iffy.
The video will show you just how bad it was. Bikes all over the place to start the lap. A lad braking halfway through Shell just when I start to accelerate fairly hard (4:58) and around 9mims a complete tt who looks over his shoulder and then blocks for half a lap. There were other frightening moments but not on camera.
I'm the bike in front in black / white leathers for most of the session

I tend to stay away from most organised motoring things with the Army involved. They think they are better than civvies at everything and so take offence at being overtaken. They tend to drive overly aggressively.
A shame, as they don't all have this attitude and misrepresent the forces a bit at these events.

They should issue warnings!
I went karting with a couple of friends and the army were present. I didn't realise until I overheard them talking. Most of them including their Sergeant were a good laugh, but a few kept blocking us, pushing us and generally acting like tts. Can only dread what they'd be like on a bike track day.
When I was in we used to take one of our Challnger 2's to Goodwood each year for a display. Most of us were petrolheads and enjoyed it, but there were always a few idiots who used to walk around like they owned the place, when they didn't really have a clue.
Individually or in small groups forces personnel are great and generally get on with anyone.

Did you get a petrol generator for tyre warmers or are you doing without?

without, you'll be fine. you can tow me round.
Yeah I went to Cadwell before without a generator, just wondering if you were bothering. Mate is on an old blade and never been to Cadwell before. I'm hoping I can pass him at least once at the start before he learns his way round
