Well some of you may have seen my random purchases over the last 4 months. V8 Discovery, beer induced, Jag XJ, passion induced, and today, a shed, which was commute induced.

I like the idea of Shedding for a daily, I have a 40 mile daily commute, mixed between country lanes, and motorway. I like comfort, I like diesel, and I like auto's. Climate is a must for the summer, leather is a plus due to the kids, and it must tow the caravan too. So not much to ask for.

Ive been eyeing up Jag S-Type 2.7 TD's for the last fortnight, almost pressed the button on one, but I randomly thought. Why spend 4k, when you can spend 1k. Its only a daily after all. So, today's purchase is this

2006 Renault Espace 3.0dci Auto Initiale.
Full Leather
120k
Cambelt and Service 3k ago
Automatic
Sat Nav
Dual Climate
6 Disc Autochanger
Detachable Towbar
Privacy Glass
Full Panoramic Sunroof

And the only thing I have found that currently does not work - radio 1!!! But thats ok, I like radio 2!

Piccies, after a quick spray with the jetwash tonight. Needs a proper clean though, and all for well into Shed money!

All that for £1k?? Nice work sir! IIRC these engines are the Isuzu unit which was also used in the Vectra and Signum, and are known for fuel pump failure which I think is an engine out job not sure if same applies to Espace

Well I put it in for MOT this morning. Well it was due! I'm not a total mug, but it has cost me £80 in parts. Two N/S Road Springs broken, N/S Track Rod end Advised, but replacing it anyway.

So not too bad, and on the road for another year, with no issues. Now, that £485 tax bill :$

Bravery is certainly in question, I also think I have a few screws loose! It'll be towing over 1600kgs of caravan shortly, so I'm glad I found out about the springs now. The heated seats this morning, burnt my ass going to work, so they work well, cruise is good.

Currently setting cruise at 75 leptons, then heavy footing down country lanes over a distance of 35 miles, Im getting 29mpg. Im quite happy with that!

Bravery? That depends.

We had one of these at my previous workplace (a 1.9 DCI I admit) on a 54 plate. Despite have some rather stupid drivers driving it (I.e they drove it as if they stole it) it soldiered on. It was not free of faults though. These included:

-The Slave cylinder seeming to always die (Somebody blamed this on the clutch always being down in traffic (it was mainly driven around town)
-Towards the end the engine was gutless in town after alot of town driving (EGR or a cracked manifold could have been the cause)
-Electric handbrake buggering up (it went twice on this car)
-Engine mounts (Like I said, soft engine mounts and harsh drivers are not a match made in heaven!
-Gearbox (this went at the very end.
-Turbo (right at the very start of its ownership.

However, the car did go from doing 110k from when it was bought to 310k! Not too bad a feat I would say for a car that was in all honesty abused by most who drove it!

I may well be buying one of these next year and so I shall keep an eye on this smile.

Brave for the OP to buy it when it clearly had next to no MOT. One would hope that it was below shed money with no ticket.

I admire the bravery, but I think, but I think it will break many times biggrin

You are a braver man than me after one of these almost drove me to financial ruin. Mine was similar spec as yours except (grand espace initaile) had beige interior with baby blue exterior.

Both xenon lights failed, the sun roof would stick open or if you were lucky closed, rear window on the boot stopped closing properly, stereo system failed. The 18" wheels were nice but the tracking went skew and ate through two front tyres in 3000 miles to canvas. Sorted but costly. Tyre sensors kept going but that wasn't unique to the espace.

However none of those were the main issue. The bloody 3.0 dci blew a head gasket (very common in these) which required the engine to be dropped. That was £1000 before the work on the engine even started. Then within months of that injectors started playing up. The turbos seem reliable on these (but not the 1.9).

It was the best and worst car I've ever owned. Good luck. If it does ever properly die I suspect you could part it out for more than you purchased it for.
