Has anyone used one of the standard insurance companies preferred windscreen fitters. I have just had a crack appear in my Windscreen after a couple of stones being thrown from up lorries on the way to work that other day. Are they any good ?. i have just contacted my insurance company and the say that i have to use them, if they are unable to replace it, they will look at a specialist to replace it. Do i forget it and go straight to the specialist and take the hit for the windscreen.

Several people have insisted on using specialists, and paying the extra that's required. I had one from Autoglass and it's fine, but not everyone's experience is the same. My crack was only about 4 inches long so driveable which was good, because it took them 4 days to get one! In fact, they sucked through their teeth at first and said they weren't sure if they were available (obviously tosh, they're not that rare).

They had a chap who'd done TVRs before which was good, and they even kept it indoors overnight for the bonding to completely set after fitting it rather than fit the roof straight away because there is lot of pressure on that top rail when you refit the roof.

I heard horror stories about the leather or vinyl being cut when removing the old screen.

I used Racing Green to replace mine. ( they subcontracted it to a specialist I believe), but I don't know who.

I thought the idea was,if you use an insurance preferred fitter, they pay all the costs. If you choose a fitter then you pay the excess about £60. That's how mine was done . wink

You always have to pay an excess for a new windscreen; at least, I don't know of any company where there isn't one. Mine was £75 with Direct Line. frown

Yes i had three after market non genuine screens fitted ,but they did not fit so they had to pay for a genuine one .

I don`t think there are any left .

They also ripped the vinyl .

There's a specialist recommended for those in or around the London area. He is on here under the name Glassman:

I needed a new screen back in 2010 and firstly had to try AutoGlass in Guildford. The chap I spoke to was very honest, as although he was very experienced he said he would politely decline the job as with the tools he had available he couldn't guarantee that he wouldn't cut the dash when removing the old screen.
Insurance company then insisted that I spoke to Auto Windscreens and although the guy I spoke to was over confident (imo) - 'My fitter in there has been fitting screens for over 30 years, of course he knows what he's doing' - he couldn't guarantee me in writing that he wouldn't cut the dash.

Armed with this I was able to go back to my insurance company and get them to agree (for a slightly higher excess) that Fernhurst TVR could fit the screen. They had the car for over 24 hrs and a perfect job. I believe they use a private fitter based in the Cranleigh area to come and fit them - someone on here might have his details, if not PM me and I'll try and search out his details.
