Would someone who has never bought a brand new Porsche simply not stand a chance of being able to buy a new RS, no matter how early an LoI was submitted?

Not a chance, the only reason your money could be taken would be to boost the OPC's order book for a few weeks on paper, possibly to help allocations. Realistically you will need to buy a 918 as the only way to be sure, and as they are all gone......

We are going back to the days when Porsche had 4 or 5 owners on a car within it's first year.

I'm old enough to remember these days whilst some of the OPC dealers are not.

Porsche returned to the enthusiasts for a short time, but now they've gone back to the 80's.
Maybe that's the link, there was a car bubble in the 80's and there is now ; everyone's at the trough from punters to dealers.

Porsche really have dropped the ball here. You can say they are a premium brand who needs to keep that brand image up, but they have gone from 50k cars to over 150k cars in 10 years. That's to make more $$. They should either have made more of these GT cars or if production lines do not support it put the price up. They are in effect not getting their fair share of the trough so to speak. Ironically it would also have made the punters happier in general. The ones who flip would not make as much money, more enthusiasts get the cars, more new younger people get introduced to the brand to reduce the average buying age down from something approaching the Honda Jazz driver ....

Even young boys walking down the street seeing an 991 GT RS drive by will think, one day, one day. He won't see one if there are only 100.

Not necessarily IMO.

They are fighting, and rightly so, to become the premium brand they have always coveted.

They have the real wealth and the nouveau crawling all over them to secure the halo models, that are also appreciating.

They are now at last, really challenging Ferrari at the pinnacle.

You may not like the method...but it's business and they have the product, controlled supply and now the cache to sustain this policy, amazingly without F1 to boost the PR.

Ferrari have been doing it for years, but only the real wealthy tend to be exposed to this, and has been accepted. Its gone largely unoticed at lower brand levels.....but has arrived with a bang at Porsche.

A few PH's can stomp their feet and turn to the prancing horse to enjoy some stratospheric depreciation, and dubious attention....but I think they will always be looking back over their shoulder at the ongoing march of Weissach.

Doing the GT cars weren't considered investment grade this thread would be much much shorter... Whinging about not getting a car won't make any difference until the market turns and demand/prices stabilise. History tells us the wait won't be many years. Patience folks. That's all you need.

You're right of course, still it doesn't really soften the blow when you realise you're just one of the proles that Porsche et al are stepping on to climb that ladder. I don't think anyone likes to be profiled so unsubtly, but as you say Porsche will sell all of the cars hand over fist and would obviously care more about brand appreciation than the souring of individual relationships.

That's a pity, I guess nobody on here with an RS order is a first time Porsche buyer?

Is/was it the same story with the regular GT3?

Likewise Rob (robGT3) & I - we were also extremely lucky to get a 991 GT3. You need to do the impossible - that is be in the right place at the right time and in the right situation. Best you can hope for in the future is you are the first eager punter through the door of a new dealership that no-one else knew about!
