I want to get an electricity energy monitor so I can keep an eye on power usage and kit on standby etc. Any recommendations? Any freebies going? I know a few years ago the major energy suppliers where giving them away for some customers as part of their 'green' commitments.

Apologies, didn't realise it was so old. Just looking around the energy companies don't seem to be dishing them out for free anymore. However a quick search on ebay shows a few that obviously were issued free for £10-£20 delivered

Owl's and the like are pretty decent, BUT, they only show you totals.

I found this was the most useful thing to use:

was easy to go round the house and work out what was using what, sounds obvious, but I was surprised by a few things, like just how bad an old fridge can be, and that my surround processor used almost the same power on standby as when it was on!

You can get a very rough idea using an infra-red thermometer - plenty for under a tenner on eBay.
Point the laser at the device and if it's pretty much the same temperature as its surroundings it can't be drawing much power.

(Obviously factor in size and surface type/colour ...)
