I had an off back in 2008 thanks to a Toyota Tundra driving over me and my precious 999S. Haven't had the bike looked at yet (long story), but from the damage it would not be worth repairing given where used prices are at. Would be a shame to waste the motor though, so what should I do with it? I've toyed with the idea of getting Roland Sands to use it as a donor for something cool but wonder what other applications can be had (and I'm not thinking v-twin powered food blender or rocking chair).

Any ideas?

How about a modernised old sports bike.
999 will drop straight into a 748 frame and really give it a perk up in performance terms.
With a few choice components you could make a very fun bike!!

That would be so much cooler with a single sided swinger but keeping a wire wheel.

OP either do the above or the 748 idea.

I'm looking to build a 996-esque bike but with 999 swing arm and twin side exhausts. No airbox so the throttle bodies are visible and wheels from a sport classic

Some great suggestions, chaps. Spirit of the Seventies is out though, as I'm living Stateside (Houston) currently. Shame I hadn't heard of them a few years back.

So far I'm digging the 748 idea the most. Has to be yellow though, and for some reason 748/749 in yellow are rarer than hens teeth over here (they're all either red, grey or black).

I've got a mate who's in the throws of building a Supermono from a 999S motor, that will be interesting once completed I'm sure.

Stick the motor in a Cagiva Navigator - the early ones used a Pantah type motor. Wide spoke wheels, scrubs, matt black paint and upset GS owners.

Some people put a TL motor in 916, why not put the 999 motor in a TL1000R to combine dodgy reliability with dodgy handling smile

If you like the idea of something a bit retro then go and see Alan Stulberg over at Revival Cycles in Austin.

He knows his way around a Ducati yum

He's putting on the Handbuilt Motorbike show on the 10th/11th April as well, same weekend as the MotoGP so worth the two hour drive biggrin

I think we may have a winner.....that show is right by the hotel we're staying at for the GP so it'd be rude not to go.

Not to mention Roland Sands will be there with the Kenny Roberts KRV5 he built with the V5 moto GP engine.
