If you are using the clamps as the later model then you probably haven't aligned the joint properly.
Some cars are a right job to align properly with owners,(and mechanics) resorting to ratchet straps to pull the manifolds together.
Redo the joint dry ensuring perfect alignment.
If yours is a bolt together job, ignore this

^^^^ As peter said, can be a pain. You can loosen the manifold bolts and get more play up/down but don't use them to pull together. After years of struggling I ended up cutting the flange and re-welding for a perfect fit after I'd matched the manifold to head ports. This ^^^^.Get a cheap ratchet from Screfix and pull the manifolds together.
