As the OP said "seem to be for political gains and kudos at home, rather than what they did, I do have issues with that" - that's the bit I have an issue with.

Depends if you want the execution to be part of the punishment.

Funnily enough that's exactly the same argument another 'apologist' used on FB ("Bali is not Muslim")!
Yes i'm aware that Bali is Hindu - it's also the bit where the tourists hang out and have fun. But we're not talking about this special case - we're talking about the mainland Indonesia (which were Buddhist and Hindu kingdoms before the Muzzies (your words) arrived 15/16th century, before you go all Good Will Hunting on me). Sorry, the travel ban I referred to was mentioned on Aussie news (obviously it would affect Bali because it is part of Indonesia).

Its the way they carry out the penalty I don't agree with. Don't they do it by firing squad? I can only assume that you have a bag over yer head, that it would be absolutely terrifying, hurt immensely and probably not be a quick death unless they shot you in the head.
Who cares? I certainly don't. Bottom line is don't deal drugs, especially in countries where they could potentially kill you when you get caught. Which ever way they put your lights out it's guarenteed not to tickle and it would take a proper sort of mental not to be stting yourself & maybe, just maybe wishing you had not done whatever landed you there in the first place.

Exactly, Joko Widodo is pushing ahead, not because of what they did and have been sentenced legally to, but because he can.

It is indeed, but whilst I have little sympathy for these chaps the whole thing stinks to high heaven of domestic political posturing to me.

well Mary Jane Veloso’s alleged recruiter has surrendered to the Philippine police

If Joko Widodo and his government execute Mary before the investigation against Christine Pasadilla aka Kristina Sergio is complete he is just a blood hungry murderer.

The Indonesian Government doesn't seem too keen on other countries knocking off its citizens

Regarding the Indonesian maid beheaded in Saudi Arabia for (denied) murder:

"The Indonesian foreign ministry has expressed anger that it was not given advance notice of the execution and has summoned Saudi Arabia's ambassador. In a statement, the ministry expressed "regret and disappointment that representatives of Indonesia both in Riyadh and Jeddah did not obtain official information regarding the time and place of execution".The government of Indonesia has done its utmost to provide legal protection and has sought forgiveness from the victim's family with the aim of getting Tarsim's death sentence commuted," the foreign ministry said."

Basically what is being done here is the Indonesians shouting to the world that if people want to drug traffick then if caught they will be topped. The worldwide media attention they are getting, puts their message over loudly and clearly.

It may not cure their drug problem, but it will surely have an effect upon it. Its not the first time they have executed drug peddlers , it most likely will not be the last.

I'm not entirely sure if I totally agree with the death penalty for drug smuggling, but its their country, not ours, so incidental really.

I would welcome the death penalty here for extreme scenarios, multiple murder as example. The fact is, the first duty of a nation state is the security of its citizens, but when you have convicted murderers , doing their sentence and being released and then murdering again , clearly something is wrong.

Drug traffickers know the score, especially to a country like this. It's the ones duped into it that I feel sympathy for. But with your life on the line I am sure everyone caught claims they were duped into it. Attempting to move drugs into a country that executes drug traffickers = very poor life decision.

Indonesia's handling of it all has been fairly horrendous. From guards and police chiefs taking pictures with the condemned men aboard the plane to all the military posturing when transporting them to the island they are due to be executed on, it's been abysmal to say the least.

The media around the world are only covering this on the front pages because of the Australian citizens. The other people convicted barely ever get a mention let alone their names in print.

it's actually an example of different religions getting on rather well. Have you ever been there?

Apparently they have to walk almost 2 miles into the jungle before they will be killed. And they're going to do this in the middle of the night? yikes That walk will be worse than the actual moment you're killed.
