Will be moving down south next year and will be needing a car to commute to work in the week and then a 4 hour round trip on weekends on the motorway.

Have 2-3k to spend on a reliable every day driver!

Any thoughts / Ideas?

How long's the commute? If it's motorway / A-Road for a good distance then it sounds like a diesel / LPG car might be more your way forward.. so.. Volvo S60 D5?

Had never even considered the MERCs, have never heard that they are very reliable if im honest?
Nobody has mentioned Diesel BMWs or VWs???

Id say weekly mileage would be 3-400 miles so would that warrant a Diesel?

I'd say so I used to do 100 miles a day with my CLK270cdi which I sold last year with 162k on the clock I bought it with 55k on the clock in that time the only extra expense was an Alternator & Radiator my average consumption over that period was 38.6mpg.

My Sister has an 05 CLK270 as her daily she does a 64 mile round trip which she averages 34mpg on a run she get's 47mpg with 80 on the clock.
I changed my CLK270cdi for an 09 CLK320cdi which is actually worse on fuel, I went to Newcastle & back in the 320cdi & averaged 43mpg where my 270cdi would see 47-49mpg.
I will say both were/are Re-mapped, running costs are between £200-£300. I will say get the gearbox fluid changed as well as the Diff oil as a precautionary measure, parts are around the same price as BMW/Audi.

Having had Audi's BMW's & being the owner of an Alpina D3 Mercedes seem to be less troublesome I'd say take a closer look at them.

Insurance has killed the merc idea, :/ too expensive for a 2-3k car, looking not to pay more than a grand
