Following on from this thread:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I need a chip removing from one PCB and soldering onto another (HDD PCB).

I'm having no luck whatsoever finding someone in the area that can do it.

Any PH'ers do this type of soldering or know of anyone, ideally locally?

Cheers!

Any pics?

I'm sure I could do it, in Birmingham, although you might find someone nearer.

Phone repair shops will also be able to do it, they'll work on far harder stuff.

Thanks TheEnd...

It's the little chip with the "8 soldered legs" in the top left hand corner in this photo:

ah, piece of piss...

There's different pin pitches, the distance between pins. The closer they are, the harder it can be.

That's a plain old SOIC8, nice wide spacing and very easy.

First port of call would be any backstreet mobile phone repair place, it shouldn't take them more than 10 mins, but if you are struggling, I'd be able to do that no probs.

That looks like a disc drive controller pcb?

What's wrong/what are you trying to do? Recover data?

Thanks TheEnd - will pop into a mobile phone repair shop tomorrow, failing that, I'll drop you a pm.

Peterperkins - basically my HDD isn't being recognised by anything that I plug it into. It will just say "Not Installed" on the BIOS screen. The HDD will spin up, however. A couple of posters in my original thread said it might be worth swapping the PCB over to see if that overcomes the issue, but first I need to swap these two little chips over for the HDD to work with the new board.
