Clarkson in trouble again...
Discussion
Provided there is a reasonable payment and both parties sign the agreement, then anything is enforceable. It happens every day in compromise agreements - a payment is made, both parties don't discuss and X doesn't seek employment for Y months.
If the employer pays 18 months salary for a 12 month contract, with a clause about not doing this or that in the 6 months after the end, then that is enforceable
But like you say, none of us have seen the contract, so any speculation about what specific terms it contains is just total bks really...

Yes a clause preventing JC from making car shows for a 'reasonable' amount of time should be enforcible,If the employer pays 18 months salary for a 12 month contract, with a clause about not doing this or that in the 6 months after the end, then that is enforceable

So what is reasonable? I would say 6 - 12 months but who knows.

Did he cash in his chips while the brand was still worth something - and because he knew that his time at the BBC would coming to an end in the near future? Can't help wondering if the lack of a new contract on the table resulted in him throwing his toys out of the pram.
I thought the new contracts had been on the table for some time, and rather it was the three amigos that had shown no inclination to sign up to that point.....?Possibly one of the reasons for a gradual simmering of on-set tension as this series neared the end.....
I still think JC and Wileman (and possibly May as well) didn't want to continue beyond this series....?

Next Problem... "Top Gear Live" Does the BBC stop them and face £10M in compensation and refunds or do a deal with Clarkson? And on that Bombshell.....
Given the BBC's willingness to squander public money in the past, I don't think they'd blink about having to can the 'Live' TG's as well, or they will reformat the 'Live' shows as per what they decide to do with the TV show.It will be interesting to see what they put in place.
Interesting Article in this weeks News Review in the Sunday Times....will post later!
But there may be hope...Messrs Clarkson, Hammond, May & Wilman had lunch last week (the day after the sacking) and apparently they were discussing how they could do something in a similar vein with a different broadcaster...it devolved into a bit of a drunken reminiscence...but clearly there is something else potentially in the works..
