Non-Kindle "Kindle"?

My wife has hinted strongly that she would like a Kindle at some point. With Mothers' Day coming up on Sunday, seems like it might be a nice gift for her.

Only complication is that she borrows a lot of books from the local library and amazon Kindles aren't able to access the library. Other types of eReader such as Kobo and Nook are able to use the local library's eLibrary.

So any tips or recommendations - e.g. reasons to pick Kobo over Nook or vice versa? It would ideally be a small one so she can easily slip it in her bag when commuting up to London. Perhaps a backlit one so she can read in bed at night. She's unlikely to want wider features so a tablet with a Kindle or Bluefire app would be a bit pointless, and might be a big negative if it was harder on the eyes.

I'd recommend you take a look at exactly what range of ebooks your local library offers, and how the service works.

I have a kindle, and bought my wife a kobo some years ago for exactly this reason, but we found that the range of books in the library was poor, and the process for getting them was very complicated, so she never really used it.

There's a much wider range of bought books available through Amazon than through the Kobo site, and the prices are much better.

Thanks. I've been downloading books from the local library onto the Bluefire app on my iPad for a while so there seems to be a reasonable selection. If I buy a kindle, she won't use it because it means buying books rather than borrowing from the library but she has mentioned a few times how an ereader would be more convenient for when she's travelling.
