Garage/old petrol station near Newton Abbot, always got some intresting metal out front, usually american.

In Colchester. A quick scout round led me believe the pumps - when it still had pumps - were quite close to the road so that the outboard cars were more or less in the road. If I'm right, pedestrians would have had to make their own arrangements. Different times.
The garage sign is a lash-up over the old fuel company sign.
On the A192 north out of Morpeth. Once upon a time this was the A1. I have a vague recollection of this place open but I can't recall when. 20 years ago? Anyway, I was driving past today, thought of this thread and went back to take pics. The more I looked, the more pumps I found. My two year old was fascinated, as you can see.
No old Land Rover but there is an old caravan.

I filled up here today. Thropton, near Rothbury in Northumberland. Actually, I didn't fill up. My 4 year old put in 9.73 litres before they shut off the pumps. They were running low and not expecting a delivery until Monday so had to ration it. Anyway, nice little post office, village shop, MOT station and mechanic's all in one.

I spotted this one yesterday. Surprisingly close to Newcastle upon Tyne, On the A694 at Winlaton Mill, about four miles from the Metrocentre of all places. Sure, not as picturesque nor as ancient as some in this thread but still an example of the dying breed.
These were serviced by us (GB Lubricants) until a few years ago. Sadly, the GB Fuels business wasn't paying, so we sold it to a competitor, meaning we could concentrate solely on the Lubricants division. It's a shame they had to go - there's a couple more in the North East, but from a business point of view, it was the only way to keep us viable.

Another one on the old A1, this time at Seaton Burn just north of Newcastle. I spotted this one this morning when the new A1 was jammed up and I took the old road as a not-very-short cut. It looks still to be open in this 2009 Google Street View image but it was very much abandoned this morning.
My wife taught a girl whose Dad owned that years and years ago. Furthermore the pub was once owned by a bloke I know called Eddie.(I don't live in or near Seaton Burn. Just coincidence)
This one in Middlewich, just off the M6 south of Warrington, also provided material for the Classics Spotted and Classics Left to Die threads.
Le patron told me the garage was built by the first owner in 1929 exclusively for motorcycles as he was sure the car would never catch on. Despite the continued popularity of motorbikes he went out of business in the thirties when the business was bought by a chap who ran it as a more conventional garage until the late seventies when the current owners took over.
Opposite the garage is the canal (I've just checked - actually three canals pass through the town, the Shropshire Union, Trent and Mersey, and the Wardle - this is one of them) and the barbers shop that I have recorded without comment.
An old Esso filling station in Moretonhampstead on the edge of Dartmoor, I've been past it every few years for about the last 20 years and watched it gradually decay. I think it was probably still open in the mid 90s.

Dawson Engineering in Burley on the edge of the New Forest, one of the few stations to carry on selling leaded after 2000, although a look at the FBHVC website suggests it may have stopped now:

Berwick Service Station, East Sussex: a small filling station that's part of the garage behind. I used to fill up there regularly a few years ago as I my commute took me nearby - it was worth it to support a local business. I think they're probably still running.

Not far away in Selmeston on the A27, another local station still running and with a good flow of customers:

Also nearby, Offham Garage & Store, another independent still going. It was shut for a while after United Petroleum (whose fuel they sold) stopped distributing road fuel which affected a few local filling stations, but fortunately they reopened as a proper independent.

Poynings West Sussex. I wonder when they stopped selling petrol?

Some really old pumps in Ixworth, Suffolk. I wonder when they were last used? There's another round the corner in a yard but Google maps doesn't show it.:

This one is in Bury St Edmunds, no idea when it was last a filling station:

Another local filling station still working, this time in Feltwell, Norfolk. A welcome sight while riding my Matchless in the summer as I'd just gone onto reserve which only leaves enough petrol for about 20 miles.

There are a couple more in my mind which I've been past recently but can't remember the names of the places they're in. I've often thought it would be good if there were a website listing local and independent filling stations, it's good to support them but it helps if you know where to find them.

It was the Model T on the roof that attracted me to the Three Corners Garage in Ambrosden south east of Bicester.
It's real Model T parts attached to a purpose built space frame. It's very effective even if it would never run.
Inside the garage is a treasure trove of bits and bobs that I had to record plus photos of the place over the years including when it had a cinema at the back built for troops stationed locally during the war. I am indebted to Dave Labross of Three Corners Garage for permission to use the photos from the garage website rather than the photos of photos I took on the day.
