So last week my other half opened the garage, popped the keys on a shelf and shut the door. Somehow the door is now locked and our only set of garage keys are inside!

It's the most basic of keys (the door must be 30 years old) but despite my best efforts I've not been able break back in. Anyone recommend a locksmith - not in a huge rush to get in so not an emergency but I'd like to get back in without breaking the lock off and needing a new one.

Any recommendations in the local area or talented ex-burglars out there? wink It's basically the handle mechanism in the photos shown here... http://www.garagedoor-spares.com/manufacturer/Gara...

Screwdriver in the top of the door ought to release the latch as you pull it open.

As normal bloke says, screw driver or wrecking bar and prise between door and timber head. Or simply read the key number embossed on the key lock and google a replacement. Or pay my call out and I'll be in within 10 secondstank

Nope, I think they are the most insecure garage door ever devised. I believe most people in their time have locked themselves out of one of these, I know I have. Most people know how to open them.

screw driver straight into the lock itself and turn, I had an identical lock and only realised this worked once someone had stolen my £1000 boardman and locked the garage behind them. Had me scratching my head for a bit..

I'd suggest sticking a padlock on the handle if it has a hole to allow, at least this gives some level of security

Just to say thank you to everyone - a £3 crowbar and literally 5 seconds work opened it without any damage or drama.

Garage security is now being upgraded! Can't have anyone nicking my precious collection of mattresses and old VHS tapes...
