Mk2 front number plate, can't believe I'm asking this.
Discussion
So I got my door cards back from Dave the trimmer and fitted them perfect.
I have a cracked front number plate which no doubt will be an MOT failure so ordered up the new plate and thought I'll just pop that on..............wrong!
I am assuming they are all the same, I have undone the 4 nuts at the rear of the number plate which is glued into a sort of surround which is mounted on a steel bracket, then I notice another two mounted to the bracket half way down the number plate which refuse to come off and just spin, I have folowed the number plate bracket which enters the bodywork to see if I can take the whole mounting off but no luck there. So how am I going to deal with it?
I can't get to the rear of the sorround that is mounted to the bracket to get a good look at it, but it seems like the plate is glued into the surround in 3 places and I am tempted to break the plate for access.
Assistance please.

Apols for a bit of thread resurrection.... Am about to change plates on my 2s, but my car currently at a specialist so cant check my front mounting. Do you have to remove the bracket (and therefore its a full bonnet off) to swap the numberplates, or was it just because ratboilers bolts had seized / weren't unfastening correctly that he had to take it off? Cheers
The plate is only stuck on with sticky pads but the two ends if the same as mine are located under the plastic frame.
So pull it from the middle and it will come off, just have faith.
Alternatively take the bonnet off, assuming you haven't had it hinged, and the whole assembly can be withdrawn up behind the service bonnet with the plate, plate surround and the mild steel cross bar that is held in place by the front main bonnet nuts.
