Ive got some reconditioned kingpins from a well known shop on an exchange basis, but slightly worried that one of them is quite pitted as if it was really sevearly corroded before it was reconditioned. This is both the axle and the upright behind where the hub sits.

Is it something to worry about? Im guessing whoever they send them to fit the bushings blasts and paints them and makes a judgement on their condition, but neither of mine coming off the car have anything more than light circumferential marks on the axle, definately no corrosion. I haven't measured it yet to see if its actualy worn/undersized.

I'll try and get photos later but it and they're at my parents house while i work on it in their garrage (with heat, power and a level floor, luxury!).

I've no idea if this is right or wrong, but the pitting will hold loads of lovely oil. lick

Pictures will help but... pitting on the axle would concern me if it's on the bearing surfaces. These are the straight bits on the axle, the taper just supports a distance piece between the bearings.

If the pitting is all the way around the surface I would send them back then send yours to me and I'll recondition them for you wink
Cleaned, painted, new bushes, kingpins, grease nipples and seals. Choice of either standard washers or roller bearings at the top trunnion and shimmed/assembled with correct stub axle float (might be a little more than the cheap ones from the "specialists" but quality costs biggrinbiggrin)

Here's the axles in question (click for the full size image)

The outer bearing part of the axle is better but still not entirely smooth.

crumbs the RH one is awful frown
The one on the left looks like they have used too high a pressure (or too coarse a material) in the blast cleaning.
If the bearing seats properly it might be okay but the seals that runs on the inner step will be toast in no time.

Send them back or you'll be doing it again very soon.

Thanks,

I'll possibly be in touch once I've got mine off and cleaned up if you're willing and able to refurbish them.

Willing and may be able depending on when you are ready to have them done (possible work commitments over the summer).
I have the correct reamers for both Midget and B and access to a press to insert the bushes.
PM me and we can discuss.
