It's the emergency key, small enough to slip into a handbag or on a lanyard while running.
The black blob in the top is the ID chip so you can start the car with it.

Thanks - any idea how you're supposed to get into the car with it? Should it be cut to fit the driver's door lock?

There's normally a keyhole (sometimes hidden behind trim) on the passenger door.

No, not that I can see; the only keyhole is the one for the pull-out metal key and that's in the Driver's door.

The car is a 14-plate Clubman Cooper D, if that makes any difference; I can find references to the 'emergency key' online, but they all date back to 10 years ago, long before push-button start and the dashboard receiver for the remote.

Yes, I was surprised it was on a picture of a Clubby as nothing similar was supplied with either my 58 or 62 plate MINIs. There's nothing like it in the R55 parts list:

Another thought is that it's a service key and the dealer has left it in the pack by mistake; probably your best option is to go to the dealer and ask. I offer egg sucking lessons for pensioners too.

That makes more sense - cheers.
