Anyone get the mcn paper today?
I've got it. They love the new R1. That said, it's MCN so take what they say with a large pinch of salt (the cover claims that it is king of track, road and dyno, and yet when you look at the power outputs it is down on a couple of others). bass gt3 said:

It doesn't matter what MCN say, everyone will probably have more of a idea what its like the BSB test tomo. I know its only testing and times don't show much but body language and what the riders say saometimes says it all.

Superstock maybe, and that's at a push. Superbike (even BSB) has bery little relevance on whether something is a 'great bike' for most people. It looks like Yamaha have created the hype and possibly restricted the numbers for this bike to be the next 'must have'.
So the question is, do I need one?
Can I ride any faster on the road and what difference would it make to being 1/2 a second a lap quicker on a trackday?
..........
Still think I need to buy one !

It seems like its living up to its hype, my main surprise was the S1000RR being off the pace, something not quite right there as the previous one was a very good bike, unless the R1 and 1299 really are that good.
I'm eagerly awaiting the new R1 going head to head with the new RSV4 now.

As you say it makes sod all difference on the road. Just buy what you like.
New S1000RR has that too. Brake force (I think that's measured off the g-meter though) and a lean angle sensor in degrees showing live readout and maximum gained.
We've turned it off on the demo as we don't want people to use it as a target
I've been out on it a few times, I love the clutch-less downshifts

Ooh Vancouver. The comments about the Fireblade and GSXR where harsh in the MCN article, personally I don't have much interest in having the fastest bike on a track, to me its all about having fun and being comfortable having it. They label these two bikes as being pretty much past it!
I think that only half the people that would buy a 1000cc sport bike actually want all the electronics that the manufacturers are throwing at them. I like ABS and want that, I like traction control, I don't really want all the power maps and anti-wheelie, I want a good throttle and I will enjoy deploying as much power as I want not dictated buy an ECU.
The GSXR can be bought for £9500, not £15000 of the others (ZX10 exception) and as they did say it was the easiest bike to have fun on as the others all had to have their modes changed to allow a skid or wheelie. As for the comments that 'you will be wanting more power' and that 'the GSXR feels like a 750 here'.................. my bike wheelies off the throttle in 2nd and will do the same over crests up to 6th, it's got quite enough power IMO! I actually read a test of the BMW HP4 (Performance Bikes I think) where the rider stated that the bike had only gone into the upper quarter of the rev range a few times in a whole day of road riding.
The press fuel buyers opinions as to what they think they need, everyone that is on the market for their first new 1000cc bike is now going to think they need an R1, Panigale or BMW as the rest are too slow.

MCN are known for frothing themselves into a lather over the newest and latest stuff. I do like the R1 although (and I've got the paper) I do find it a little bit hard to fathom why the s1000rr is so much off the pace. Two seconds is light years.
The only reason would be tyres. Is the aYam running proper track tyres whereas the others are on their showroom rubber? Otherwise I calll BS. It might be fast but to drop the ZX and BM by more than 2 seconds is fanciful tbh.

All bikes were on the new Racetecs. ZX10R would have been slow because of it's stupidly tall gearing. Unsure on the Beemer, but wouldn't be surprised if this was the case again.Otherwise I calll BS. It might be fast but to drop the ZX and BM by more than 2 seconds is fanciful tbh.
Honda and Suzuki were a further second off the Beemer and Kawasaki.

Then I call BS!!!
2 plus seconds is an eternity on track. Seeing as it makes neither the most power or torque and isn't as light as a feather compared to the others, this can only be a case of the cretins at MCN bigging up the new kid and securing Yamaha marketing $$$

Acceleration data is used internally to monitor the TCS, so they simply output some of the data to the dash. Likewise, the more modern ABS systems also monitor brake pressure as part of their activity. None of this is particularly "factory".Try looking at the dash whilst you're aiming to see something meaningful in terms of +G/-G or high brake pressures and you're likely to be looking at the dash whilst the bike is on top of you
