The sentiment behind his desire to restrict immigration is the same as the British sentiment we had here in the 1970s when he first arrived i.e. No blacks, no dogs, no Irish.

So yeah I think it's hypocritical that he was given the opportunity to better himself but wants to prevent others doing the same. He's been here 40yrs, contributed to society and paid his taxes (we presume) so why not allow others to give it a go?

btw this Australian points system everyone raves about, has anyone tried it? I can only just get in despite a degree and a well paid job. Would anyone else pass it today? Would Don have passed it given his circumstances in 1970's?
He would have done at the time.

Back then they were paying people to go to aus.

Times have changed...

I'm "only" an electrician by trade, no degrees here sadly, not that I need one - they offered me a place in their country with open arms three years ago, at the age of twenty four.

Didn't take it up due to some personal issues that arose, I'm afraid.

Obviously they had a rather greater need of electricians than they do smug bell-ends.

Donal is an Irish immigrant. He's been given the opportunity to better himself but now he wants to pull the ladder up and prevent other immigrants doing the same.
Do you ever stop and think about what you say, actually means ? So you know he is arguing for controlled immigration of some sort, but seem to suggest he is some how hypocritical to have this opinion, like an immigrant can only support open door immigration because they were allowed in to the UK ? Could you attempt to explain you reasoning behind this ?

So he as an immigrant is required in your mind to not say no to anyone at all, ever ? That's mad. Along with your slur that basically suggests racism as the only motive.
I doubt I'd get in to Aus. Oh well, my hard luck. Your inability to say no to anyone is lunacy.

The only occupation on that list that I can tick is 'Ships Officer'(obviously I won't tell them that it's been nearly 20 years since I drove the big grey things...)

I don't think I'll be applying though - I went there once and it was a cultural desert. smile

Speaking of pricing, has anyone noted just how much petrol has risen in the last week?

Whatever happened to that forthcoming price slump at the pumps due to the low price of crude 6 weeks ago that was meant to make it's way to the consumers?

Election? what election??

Taxation for starters. Lots of taxation.

[that had to be a trick question]

The US government controls UK downstream pricing? It doesn't even control the price of crude. That is OPEC's privilege.

Really?

So the wild swings in crude price has nothing to do with the US controlled oil exchange?

It's mainly Saudi Arabia dumping oil on the market in an effort to deflate the price of energy, they know the game is up for oil as alternatives gain pace, the dogs in the street can see that.

Very little. It's the Saudis.
