Hi looking to replace my exhaust bobbins please can anybody advise where to get them thanks

I think they are common items, if so try your local motor factors or exhaust place.

I believe these are the genuine item wink




Maybe not so easy to find at your average "Exhaust Centre" these days as virtually all modern cars use bolt free mountings, big rubber bands and similar scratchchin

I always thought a "bobbin" was one of these types of mounting ie a threaded stud at each end.

These are what hold my "silencer" on.

The problem with the 'bobbins' with the threads at either end is that the standard ones are designed for a much lighter exhaust which doesnt take the kind of stress ours does. The 'bobbins' of the type used in minis etc are relatively light duty, and one of the first things you change if you want to use the car competitively.
The pairs of rubber cushions as sold by TVR Parts are as original fitment and have a large bolt through the centre and it is this bolt which takes the load, the rubbers are there as vibration cushions.
That having been said the TVR solution is not ideal as it does allow quite a lot of vibration to transmit through. If you do not believe me try temporarily wiring the exhaust on fairly loosely, there was a marked reduction in transmission of noise to the car. But is there a 'bobbin' type fitting out there which is man enough to do the job and small enough to fit?

As originally fitted to my car, the 'pairs' of rubbers were fitted on either side where the rear box starts, but the rear end where the pipes bend upwards was a double ended bobbin with threads at both ends. As this was perished and stretching I searched high and low for a matching one but couldn't find one anywhere that was the right dimensions. Ended up using one half of a rubber 'pair' and an appropriate bolt. Could do photos at the weekend if it helps.

Just for the record, while I was working on my S I took the following. On mine the rear exhaust mount is essentially the same as the central mounts, except with a smaller bolt. Bolt goes right through two 'bobbins' and the bracket on the exhaust.

Completely different to later S3 where bolt goes through exhaust and into a tapped insert in boot floor.

Except the tapped insert isn't in the boot floor, it's in the back of the petrol tank cradle
