Joking apart smile , it may well be worth your while contacting "consumer direct" (or whatever they are called today - they were the "public access portal" for Tradng Standards the last time I needed them redface ) and speaking to them (including details of the printed receipt with the 10 year promise)? As a starter for ten, anyway smile .
"The cuts" did for Consumer Direct some time ago. Trading Standards doesn't really exist as far the general public is concerned either any more. Most Councils refer you to the CAB.

That's definitely the quality of invoice I'd expect to see from someone who is a member of the 'Guild'.

Looks like he's even taken the time to craft them a new logo, seeing as the typography is nothing like the proper one.

I'm surprised he didn't add Member of the Fellowship of The Ring in there for good measure.

I had a 10 year guarantee on a roof that pretty much blew away in a stiff breeze a couple of years after fitting, the master craftsman who did the job diagnosed the problem as 'storm damage, that's not covered under the guarantee...', the fact that our's was the only roof in the area that went awol meant nothing to him. In the end it was easier to claim on the insurance than to chase a no doubt penniless roofer through the courts, sometimes it's just not worth the hassle.

I wonder if you'd be so willing to move on if it was your £750. Somehow I doubt it, what stupid advice.
Speaking as someone with some experience of dealing with tradesmen, I'd endorse the advice to forget it and get a proper job done. Looking at the standard of work gives you an idea as to the type of man you're dealing with, chasing him will be a thankless task and the best outcome likely to be no more than a bit more slop to fill the gaps, it's really not worth the pain.

Is he a member of the guild?
Contact them and check

Has he done the work he quoted for ? Rebed or buttered?

If all is not then it could be fraud and then trading standards would be interested

I ran a roofing business for 20 years , the guy that did that job spent the money he charged the same day paying some of his bill off at the local builders merchants then went to the pub to spend the rest , I used to end up correcting bad workmanship like that all the time , usually for less than the original price charged .
It's not stupid advice , it's honest advice based on working in the trade .

I understand what you're saying but it sticks in the craw somewhat that the OP has handed over £740 for some shoddy work that the roofer has effectively got away with, that's what gets my goat. 'Stupid advice' was probably a bit harsh but I think that suggesting the OP should roll over and forget it just doesn't sit well with me.

No probs , I see your point , it's just after working in the industry for so long I know how these clowns operate , the op will never see the money and really doesn't want the same guy back , he quoted for stripping , cleaning , making good and re bedding , all he actually did was point over the existing quite badly .
The best thing to do is take it on the chin and move on , it boils my piss to know people out there are getting ripped off by idiots , unfortunately roofing is a cowboy trade a lot of the time , I sacked a couple of time served tradesmen I took on once as the labourer knew more than they did !
I wasn't trying to be a smartarse when I replied , it really was an honest opinion , maybe it didn't read to well when I posted it .

No worries mate. I had a friend of mine who got thoroughly reamed by a complete of a builder to the tune of several grand some years ago. Took him to court and won but as expected no money in the piggy bank. He knew he was never going to get his money back but he made damn sure the bloke never got any work in the local area again. I just hate stty behaviour by incompetent tossers who just seem to get away with it time and time again, they deserve to be pursued if only to make their lives difficult for a little while. Grrr!

Very good thanks. There is a wealth of advice regarding this sort of incident, and has been for many years. But people still hand over their hard earned. It's why the Bodgers exist, because 'There's one born every minute'

Ok?

Lovely. remind me again how 'There's one born every minute' answers the OP's original question?

It advises him to wake up and smell the coffee, is that lovely enough for you dear?
