When I was young I couldn't understand why my Dad was always so excited to get the first Jersey Royals in, now that I'm somewhat older and my tastebuds are better developed I fully understand what a wonderful flavour they have.

I've been checking the supermarkets daily this week and will be grabbing the first I see to have lightly steamed, served with salt and butter and accompanied by a nice rare steak.

Waitrose, had some last night with butter and parsley, nice but not worth the premium IMO. I prefer Anya pots if I can find them. yum

Jersey Royals don't taste like they used to. People blame the EU for banning the seaweed fertiliser but that's an incorrect myth. The reason that seaweed is used less is down to economics although some of the remaining 20 farms still do use it. Problem is that so many are now forced under plastic, couple that with increased mechanisation in the harvesting and the way the potatoes are treated in the distribution network.

Every so often you do find some fine tasting Royals here on the mainland that have a hint of the old taste. Not in Waitrose ime.

These days Cornish early cliff potatoes, if you can get them, are recommended. Again sometimes a hit, sometimes a miss.

The trick with jersey royals is to get the absolute smallest ones you can find. Boil them till they're just cooked and throw them in a frying pan with butter, salt and pepper for a couple of minutes. Perfect!

That's a fair point. For example Hovis used to taste exceptional. Now - very run of the mill. Suspect that was because back in the day it was up against white sliced factory bread. Today it's up against artisan breads and even some supermarket baked stuff is not at all bad. Of course when you bake your own from a sourdough starter difficult to find any shop bought comparable.

Back on topic when I have my own family on Jersey saying that Royals aren't a patch then something is up.

Waitrose had them in £3 for small bag of cleaned up little ones, worked out £6 a kilo or they had loose larger ones covered in soil still for just over £3 a kilo.

The first time I ever tried them, they were brought over by a Jersey resident in his luggage and had been out of the ground less than 24 hours. I never knew a simple boiled potato could taste so good and as I was told nothing I could buy in a supermarket could compare I never bothered trying them since.

I'm sure I recall some TV chef (Jamie O ?) saying that potatoes/root veg need to be bought uncleaned, as the cleaning process does something to help reduce flavour....... I could be wrong boxedin

The Jersey Royal season begins in November with planting under glass.
The main outdoor crop is planted from January to April with harvesting from the end of March through to the July.
The peak of the season is May.
