I have a 2008 S8 V10 that has developed a rattle over the last 15k miles. Its now done 80k and although sense and trade friends tell me to get rid I would like to have any recommendations on a good source for a rebuild and general refresh. It will be a second car afterwards. It sounds like wear in the timing chains. I am told the specialist needs a cradle for engine extraction and really best left to V10 specialists. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Thanks Paz. Have spoken to a specialist today and sent him a short vid. Could be inlet manifold aprox £3.5 k inc vat,or chains etc at anywhere between £5 and £8k. Bit of a dilemma as to repair could mean gearbox etc in another few thousand, but not really saleable as is. Will speak to your guys in morning but not looking good for the future of this particular S8.

Hi is the engine light on? I've known 2 V10's that have had issues with the cam sprocket bolts coming loose allowing the timing to go out you then get a engine light and a misfire, until the piston hits the valves and bends them, you then get the rattle which gets worse over time. At 80K it will need the decoke, it is as horrible as it looks and really does rob lots of power.
Almost every job is epic, I actually managed to get my head off the drivers side, but it was truly a ba5tard, Audi really did make it as hard as possible, the engine and box has to come out in one together with the manifolds and down pipes, as you mentioned they have a proper table to drop it out. Makes a 20K car worth 8k if it needs an engine, a few BSM V10's in Germany but they ask 7K Euro and done 70k KLMs

Appreciate your reply, thanks. No lights ever on,just a ticking over several months which worsened, but now the bag of nails rev. Strangely the car is ok on everything apart from noise, and even now starts well and drives as ever, although a mechanic who listenes said he would not drive it,so it sits idle. I have been told that many of the larger Audis go this way S6,RS6 etc basically uneconomical to repair. Such a shame as ceramic braeks, bose,FSH etc,but basically good for breaking.

That is quite sad, like I said I did my own car 08 face lift and it was an epic job, the drivers side head off without taking the engine out, and I've also swapped an engine for a chap and that truely is a huge undertaking, but Audi did offer him a new engine for £19k plus vat plus fitting!! where as he got a second hand engine fitted for 11k, he had the car from new 09 plate full VAG SH 105k miles so he was more than happy.Let us know your findings, I'm very curious to find out what the rattle is.

Worth checking the exhaust manifold gaskets. I had one blow on a car years ago (not a V10) and it sounded like a big end failure when you revved it, but the engine felt smooth and the rattle couldn't be located by ear.

It was a cheap fix instead of the thousands I was expecting. Have you been over the engine with a stethoscope?
